These creatures look almost identical to humans except that their faces are on their chests. The reason for this being that most of them do not have heads. They are said to be once human , but they rebelled against the gods and to punish them, the gods removed their heads and hid them. Those who managed to find their head, would end up carrying it under their arm, having no way to reattach it. Acephali is the plural form of Acephalos. They are also known as the Akephale. The word acephali literally means "without a head". These creatures were mentioned mostly in the works of Herodotus and Josephus.
