PROLOGUE
"I heard she had sex with him, that's how she got it too."
"Ew. She's nasty."
"Shut up Gray. You think anything that has to do with sex is nasty. You still believe guys have the cooties."
"Apparently they do, if they got diseases floating around."
"Whatever. When do you plan on having sex anyway? Your fifteen, everyone is doing it."
"Well I'm not everyone. I want to save myself for someone special, and you should too."
"Your the only reason I reconsidered losing my virginity yesterday. And that's why your my best friend, Gray. You are smart, and pretty. You have ambition and motive. You think before you do things. I wish I were you sometimes."
"Imani, don't say that. Your all those things too. You just have a different way of doing things. Were best friends for a reason."
"I love you girl." Imani stooped their walk to hug her best friend.
Gray and Imani have been friends since diapers. They grew up together, was always there for one another. They always went to school together, and walked home together. Today was no different. Except for a few glitches.
"I love you too Imani." Gray said once they released from the hug.
They continued their walk down the street. They lived next door to each other, and fourteen blocks from the school. As they were walking and talking a few boys approached them.
"Yo what's up ladies. Y'all coming from school?"
"Nigga, what it look like?" Gray responded in her normal rude mouth, as they continued walking.
The guys followed. "Ma, you too sexy for all that attitude. How old are you? That ass telling me you about sixteen, but them tits are telling me something else." His boys laughed.
Gray stopped in her tracks and spun to face the boy. "Watch how the fuck you talk to me wit' yo ugly ass. I was trying to be polite, but you fuckin' up."
"A'ight. My bad ma, my bad."
"Exactly. Let's go NiNi."
Gray and Imani continued to walk off with the boys in tow.
"Let me make it up to you."
"No thanks."
Because of those boys, the girls were oblivious to the car inching their way. Before they knew it shots were being fired their way.
POW! POW! POW!
Shots followed by more shots. Gray fell to the ground and crawled in attempt to get away from the mayhem. In the process she was grazed by a gun on her neck causing her to scream out in pain. She quickly searched her book bag for her phone. She couldn't find it. Once the shots ceased, Gray heard tires screeching away. Gray slowly walked over to where Imani was laid out, already crying. Gray kneeled down and felt her pulse, there wasn't one. Gray cried her eyes out on her best friend briefly, she knew she couldn't stick around. She kissed her forehead, and closed her eyelids after taking one last look at her golden eyes. Gray looked at all the other dead bodies. Simply at the wrong place, at the wrong time. Gray couldn't help but wonder who was shooting, and who names were originally on those bullets. Without thinking twice Gray ran for her life. She was running so fast, she didn't even see the man before bumping into him. Gray fell to the ground, and the man helped her up.
"I'm so sorry. You have to help me." Gray panicked, hoping he could help.
"Slow down baby girl. I can help, tell me what happened."
