An Experiment

American children are fed the same lines from birth, we live in the land of the free, and home of the brave. We are lucky, they say, to live in such a liberal place.
I used to believe this. I used to think that the right to dress how I wanted, speak how I wanted, and act how I wanted, was mine. But as I grew older, and grow older still, these illusions are falling away, and I'm learning to push them aside on my own.
One of the first lessons my new eyes taught me, was that we are not equal. I was scrolling through my social media and came across a post by a woman who had recently performed a social experiment with rather disturbing and unbelievable results.
She had noticed that despite the claims of equality, American society still seemed to teach men to be greater, and women to be lesser. One example of this, we see, but never notice everyday. She went around her business like she normally did, but with one key difference. When she and another person were about to collide while walking, she didn't go around them. Every man she came across would not go around her, and instead waited for her to walk around them. They automatically expected her to adhere to them, knowingly or not.
All the women, on the other hand, automatically swerved around her, and continued on their way. I could not believe that I had never noticed such blatant patriarchy. So, naturally, I decided to try it myself.
I did this for a week. Everywhere I went, I performed as I normally do, until I met someone head on. As the previous report showed, all the women parted like the Red Sea, albeit with some odd looks. The men, even those in my family, behaved exactly as they had in the original.
I was mind boggled. How had I never noticed this? This first instance would cause a chain of instances that slowly opened my eyes to the true patriarchy of the oblivious society I found myself in.
