I trudged through the leaves, staring hard all around me, hoping I'd find something that caused that noise.
It sounded...almost like someone...or something...was crying for help.
Suddenly, a flash of color appeared between the leaves of a bush.
I broke into a run, my heart pounding.
"Hey!" I shouted, rounding a tree. "Are you-"
I stopped dead in my tracks.
What...no...
It was...a human...
A human was lying face-down in front of me.
My hands and legs shook as I knelt cautiously beside it.
It was small, and I guessed it must've been a kid, like me.
I reached out hesitantly and tapped its shoulder.
"H-hey. Are...are you ok? H-how...how'd you get down here?"
I started as the human groaned softly, and struggled to rise. I grabbed it under its arm and heaved it to its feet.
I had to take it home to mom and dad...it was badly hurt!
"What's your name?" I asked it as we stumbled through the underbrush.
It didn't say anything, so I introduced myself.
"My na m e i s..."
