03. "Oh My God, You Too?"

I'm listening to Ed Sheeran on my phone. We are almost there, and I can't even explain how much I'm dreading this.

My mom reaches over and takes an earphone out of my ear.

"What?" I ask, slightly annoyed but not showing it.

"You won't be listening to this trash when we actually get there, right?" My mom gives me a disapproving look.

I shake my head. "No."

"Good." She faces the front. "Frank, how long until we get there?" She asks the driver of the limo.

"There is about eleven more minutes, ma'am." He replies as he checks the car watch.

Eleven more minutes until hell.

"Usual deal?" I ask my mom.

She sighs. "Yes."

"What is it this time?" I ask.

Mother and I have this routine right before we enter places of doom (places that she made me go to like for example this fucked up dinner party). Over the years, we've made a deal: I can leave the place whenever I want if the situation is exactly like what she says before we go in. True, the percentage of it happening is probably in the negatives, but it's still worth a try.

"This time..." My mother pauses to think. "Only if you get a drink poured on your dress by someone you know."

I look down at my white sweetheart dress. Shit. "How about being nicer for a change?" I plead.

She shakes her head. "No. Now go in, we're almost late."

I sigh, thinking that there was no way out of this.

We walked in into the building.

I have to admit, whoever did the decorating did a pretty good job. It's royal blue and silver/white themed, and that happens to be one of my favorite color combinations.

I wrap my earphones around my phone and tuck it into my clutch. My mother and I go around, saying hi to other snobs.

"Mom, who's party is this?" I whisper to her.

"A celebration to do with the school board's son coming back from the other side of the world." She says back quietly.

"Where?" I ask.

"I'm not sure. I think it was somewhere down south...?" My mom answers. I'm sort of surprised, it's not like her to actually not know about something.

"Oh."

As we continue walking around, I find myself wondering about who the guy is. The guests of the party haven't showed up yet. So basically we're all here for no reason.

Well... People are networking around for other people that might help them in their business later on. But that doesn't really count as a reason. It's just what these stupid snobs do. Everything in their eyes is money, and business. They always put that first and often it ruins their lives, because they put everything else in the background.

Wow. Deep thoughts. I should prospone them for later, seeing that I can't space. Just by standing and thinking there for like two seconds, I've already lost my busy mother in the crowd.

I walk around, like a lost puppy. I don't know hell around this place, and it's really bothering me. I decide to leave the room and look for her elsewhere, seeing that I've already made my way around that room ten times.
