Prologue: Greyson & Ezra

Greyson's parents were oddly calm when they first came out to them as gender non-binary. Being the conservative-Christian-family they were, Greyson was half expecting their dad to beat them to death while their mother cried about having lost their daughter ---Neither of those things happened. Instead, Greyson's' mother suggested that they go to bed and that the three of them could all talk in the morning, though, 4:00 am was not quite what Greyson had in mind when she said morning.

Greyson woke up to their mother hovering over them with the kind smile she always wore. With the sky still dark outside and a small flashlight being the only thing illuminating her it looked a bit more menacing that it did warm, but Grey wiped their eyes and smiled anyway.

"I'm sorry for waking you so early Maria, but we have a guest, and they don't have much time to chat. Join us downstairs, would you?" Greyson leaned up from their bed and gave their mother a kiss on the cheek.

"It's Greyson mom. Not Maria." Her smile faltered slightly- just long enough for the menacing look to become disgusted for as long as it takes to blink- but then she regained her gentle motherly demeanor.

"Sure, it is. 5 minutes enough?" Greyson's mother did not stay long enough to hear any response Grey could have given as she left the room.

Greyson debated whether it was worth getting dressed for the school day, or if they should just straighten out any obvious traces of sleep. Anyone here at the ungodly hour is probably expecting to see them in their pajamas anyway.

Grey rolled out of bed and walked over to their mirror to brush the knots out of their hair. The idea of having supportive parents had never even crossed Greys mind and somehow, it seemed to just open so many doors for them. The idea of asking for a haircut seemed a lot less daunting and maybe, just maybe, their parents would pay for them to get top surgery someday so that Greyson could stop having to save their own money. Just thinking about all the things Grey could spend a couple thousand dollars' worth of savings on was overwhelming.

Grinning madly, Greyson made their way out of their bedroom, down the hall, and towards the congregation in the living room. Greyson was oddly surprised to recognize the voice of their church's pastor accompanying that of their fathers. The two of them were sitting in the living room discussing things in hushed tones while Grey's mom was busy in the kitchen fetching them food and drink, no doubt at her husband's command. 'That will never be me' Greyson thought to themself.

"Pastor Lee! Hello!" Greyson said making their presence known.

"Maria, how good it is to see you so early in the morning. You look very comfortable. I'm sorry to have woken you." Pastor Lee rose to his feet to kiss Greyson's hands, but Greyson instead took the pastors hand and shook it firmly.

"No worries Sir, the pleasure is mine. I'm sure you did not mean to miss speak, but I go by Greyson now."

Greyson tried to ignore the look their father and the pastor exchanged with one another.

"Maria," Grey's father said in a bitter tone, blatantly ignoring Greyson's requested name, "Could I have a word with the pastor alone?" Grey could see the stress on their fathers' face, but seeing as he so easily disregarded Greyson's name, Greyson, in turn, disregarded his request as well.

"Seriously dad, it's Greyson it's not that hard if you just- "

"Excuse me Maria. I asked something of you and I would like you to do it without talking back. Do not embarrass yourself in front of the pastor."

Greyson and their father seem to be fueling each other's fire as they glared at each other, neither wanting to be the first to look away. From the clear anger and annoyance Grey could see in his eyes, they were starting to wonder if maybe they misread this situation entirely and only their mother really accepted them. If waiting until the morning was their mother's way of letting her husband cool down a bit, it seems to have backfired.
