"do you know what cinnamon tastes like?"
"no."
tom rolled in his bed, the covers hanging sadly halfway on his body. the sheets were ruffled around him which made him look like a bird nuzzled in it's nest. he let out an exasperated sigh of desperation.
"well do you know what peppermint tastes like?"
"perhaps."
"not helping, loser," tom spoke into the phone.
on the other end of the phone the voice on the other side giggled childishly. tom could hear the person on the other end move around in their bed sheets.
"peppermint tastes like winter; like kissing someone lovingly under a tree raining snow. both of you would be freezing but then the kiss warms you and leaves a peppermint flavor in your mouth."
"you've done that with your soulmate?" tom asked curiously.
"i don't have a soulmate," the voice paused. "i just tend to experiment."
tom took a quick moment to think, he knew that to taste sweet flavors you needed your soulmate. so, how could he know what peppermint tastes like without having his soulmate by his side?
"that doesn't make sense."
"it's experimenting with other people. you won't find your soulmate unless you try."
"then how do you know the flavor of peppermint?"
another laugh.
"just a lucky guess."
tom groaned and sprawled his body helplessly across the mattress which groaned and creaked in response to these actions. the black cat who was once resting on the edge of the bed pounced away into the shadows.
"tord, you're not making this easy."
"who said i was trying to make things easy?"
tom snarled and was now sitting upright in his bed. he rubbed his eyes tiredly and looked out the window with the curtains drawn back. across the way he could see the silhouette of tord in his bedroom. he was clearly enjoying himself from what tom could see.
"i can see your stupid face from here idiot. stop laughing," tom complained throwing his arms upwards.
the silhouette twirled himself around and into the moonlight where tom could now see all of his features. the boy was devilishly smiling with such a teasing manner to intimidate tom into temptation.
tord waved from where he was sitting, the same smirk on his face like it was a mainstream joke that never failed to appear everywhere; tom saw that smirk so many times that it seemed annoying at this point. he rolled his eyes.
"what if i was your soulmate," tord questioned.
"how could you be my soulmate?" tom never took that daring question into consideration even once. he never thought that way of his best friend.
"well we never tried it have we?" he was staring straight at tom now with such sharpness that tom felt like he was shattering against his gaze.
"i'm not gay tord."
"but what if i was your soulmate?" tord asked again, not failing to have that same seriousness in his voice.
tom's cheeks lit up like a christmas tree as he thought about that; he honestly looked like a tomato from where tord was sitting. the norewegian boy couldn't help but laugh at his stupid look.
"i guess it would be okay; you're my best friend."
there was determination in tord's eyes as he heard that sentence on his end of the line. he looked like he was going to bust up into giggles. it was kind of cute.
