I'm not sure if Wattpad is going to include where I had footnotes, so if they're there then ignore them. I put them in for when my class was reading it. Enjoy!
"That is the sixth letter I've watched you burn in the past three weeks." Lysander stated. He paused, then asked, "Who are they from?" He lounged upside down on the dais at the front of the library. It was also where he and Avalon had dozens of books scattered in their search for answers. He couldn't see her face, but he was sure there was a serious expression against the backdrop of her youthful appearance. Of course, he had come to learn appearances could be deceiving. Pulling himself upright, he grabbed a piece of toast from the plate sitting next to him, stuffing it into his mouth. He began coughing in disgust spitting it back out onto a nearby napkin, turning around in time to find Avalon staring at him with her own look of disgust.
"Are you sure you were raised as an Earl's son?" She asked, popping a sugar covered bloodberry into her mouth. She'd never been one for breakfast food, so they often had them imported to Dannamore for her. The destination of the berries changed for the long summer months. Avalon raised her hand wiping the corner of her lips where the berry had stained them red.
"I'll only answer that if you tell me who has been sending you letters since you arrived," He challenged.
Sighing, she dramatically fell into a nearby chair as she lifted the back of her hand to her forehead like she was checking for a fever. "Oh, Lord Lysander, it pains me to tell you that it is one of my other suitors. It would cause my father to fall ill if he heard, oh, my lord, promise me you'll keep my secret."
Lysander chunked one of the books nearest to him towards the chair where she sat, rolling his eyes. He knew she wouldn't be honest with him. He would think he was getting closer to her, then she'd shut down and cast him out. He had learned to never bring up her brothers, Nicholas and Dawson unless he wanted to face the tempers of both her and her father. It had become increasingly difficult to avoid the topic whenever the other lords brought it up at dinner or in council meetings.
Avalon laughed as she popped another bloodberry into her mouth. Picking up the book he threw at her, her eyebrows knitted together as she read the title; "The Secret History of the Ruling House of Montcroix."
Opening it, she ran her fingers over the mustard colored paper, reading aloud, "Year 150 BSF." Her eyes squinted together, shaking her head, she said, "I can't read anything else. I never excelled at languages anyway, could you read it?"Lysander now stood next to her, his hand resting on the top of the chair as he reached out with the other for the tattered book. Avalon passed it to him their fingers brushing together.
"I can read a few words here and there, but not much else. I think it's one of the native languages, but I can't say for sure. Our House abandoned the languages of the common people after my Grandpa joined with Lyier, so I was never taught." Lysander passed the book back to Avalon who placed it into her lap as she flipped through a few pages before finally closing it. "Whatever it says, it's old. It's before the Proclamation that outlawed magic, it's before Dannamore was even Dannamore."
Lysander nodded his agreement, tapping his ring finger against the top of the chair. "What if we got someone to translate it?"
Avalon turned to fully face him, raising a slender eyebrow. Pushing her hair away from her face, she asked, "Have you gone mad? The title literally says 'Secret History,' I don't think we should be going and waving it around Montcroix."
"For us to have been able to read the title it had to have been rebound at one point."
Avalon grew silent, thinking over what he said before she finally huffed, saying, "Fine, but we find someone outside of the castle to do it. I'm sure Jamal knows someone, and he's good at keeping secrets from Father."
