I sat up with a jolt and a cold rush filled my veins. Sweat seemed to burn my forehead like water from a kettle and it took me a while to realise where I was. My eyes adjusted to reveal a room, my room. I was in bed, alone, which was what frightened me the most.

April. Where was she? Before I could control my confusion and rage I found my hands viciously pulling at my hair and I was screeching her name. I could feel my eyes widen as if they were to burst from my head. My breathing was frantic and struggled to handle my terror. I screamed, and screamed, for what seemed like hours until someone crashed in to the room, causing the doors the bang hard against the wall.

I didn't recognise the man, but there was some familiar aura about him that immediately told me to stop screaming. Silent tears fell effortlessly down my face as I muttered April's name under my breath repeatedly.

"Shhh, it's going to be okay, it was a nightmare, okay?" His voice was warm and soothing, and the way he stroked my hair was calming despite the terror that was still creeping through my veins.

My breathing slowly began to regulate.

"Whe-where is m-my little g-g-girl?" My voice was shaking almost uncontrollably as I mustered the courage to ask the question, despite my fear of knowing the answer. The stranger looked at me with complete confusion.

"You don't have a little girl. You cannot have children because you are ill." Within a second his voice had gone from luke warm to a discomforting stone cold. I felt panic once again surge through me and a painful burst of realisation stabbed my mind and I struggled to decipher what he meant.

"That's not true, her name is April. I do have a child, check my bag. Get my phone, I have the father's number!" My voice was firm, and it was a tone I hadn't herd for a long time. He pursed his lips and muttered the shhhhhing sound once more. He placed his finger to my lips as if trying to once again calm me down, and failing.

I figured the only way to work out what was happening was to play along with his little game and pretend to be confused, which wasn't technically untrue. For my sake as well as April's, I had to stay collected.

"What is my name?" I asked inquisitively.

I watched as his eyes discreetly wandered upwards, he didn't know.

"Samantha Rayne."

It shocked me that he knew my name, however I knew I had to act like I was expecting it which was much harder than expected.

"I see, and tell me, where is my husband?"

"He is working."

Lie.

"The office had to keep him behind tonight."

Lie.

"But there is good news! He's working up to a promotion and he will be over to see you later."

Lie.

Lie.

Lie after fucking lie.

"I'm not crazy." I whispered, somehow sinisterly. He crouched beside me as if he hadn't heard what I said. I couldn't stop myself. I grabbed him by his collar and pinned him against the wall.

"Where the fuck is my daughter? Give her back to me right now!"

He quivered like a puppy in my grip and stuttered quietly, too quiet to decipher. "Who put you up to this? Who has her? Tell me." I could tell I was intimidating him, which was intended but I couldn't help but somehow feel bad for him. I shook it off, and focused. April.

"I swear I don't have April! But I know who does! Just let me go and I'll take you to them! Please?" The words fell from his mouth like a river flowing through a canal. I dropped him as his body fell to the floor, almost lifeless with fear if his breathing hadn't caused his chest to pulsate rhythmically. I edged closer and clawed him once across the face. Four bleeding scratches left across his cheek. A wave of regret rushed through me, but I knew I had to remain strong and firm, for April.

"Take me to her." I said softly, carefully keeping the authoritative tone in my voice. He nodded quickly and walked hurriedly towards the door, one hand on his bleeding face.

I grabbed his shoulder as he jumped slightly in fear, he did not turn to face me nevertheless. "I'm sorry about your face, but I need you to understand that there is nothing more important to me than my daughter." He nodded as I saw the light catch a tear that fell swiftly down his face.

"I had a daughter once, they took her as well. Left me all alone. They said it was for experiments but I know what they did to her. Her name is still tattooed on my wrist to stop me from slitting. I miss her, and I want her back." I was tacked aback by his words. I loosened the grip on his shoulder and I quickly whispered an apology in his ear before he nodded and we continued to walk out of the room, to find my beloved daughter.
