It was a late night in Elmore, a heavy rain battering the houses in the sleepy town, and winds pounding against the windows.
It was a muggy summer night, all the kids of Elmore Jr. High on summer break. Everybody was doing well, all except for one.
Gumball Watterson gripped his bedsheets in the middle of a bad dream. He pulled the blankets to his chest and gritted his teeth in his sleep. He suddenly popped awake, hitting his head on the upper bunk. "Owww—-" he rubbed his head with a paw and sleepily rubbed his eyes. He looked over at his alarm clock next to Darwin's fishbowl. 2:15 am. Gumball looked around as his eyes adjusted to the dim room. He was suddenly startled when he heard a loud bang on his closet door.
Bang!
Bang!
Out of curiosity, the blue cat swung his legs over the side of the bed and tossed his covers off, going to investigate. He silently tip-toed towards the closet.
Bang!
Gumball's ears flattened against his head as he reached for the closet door handle. Sweat beamed against his brow as he started opening the door. He suddenly flung open the door and a figure came tumbling out.
The figure was solid white, and glowing. He fell head-over-heels onto the carpeted floor, and finally landed upside-down, looking at the bewildered Gumball.
"Aro?" Gumball cocked his head to the side in confusion. "Aro..." Gumball clenched his teeth and growled. "Wait! Gumball... before you tear me to shreds, I need to talk to you." Aro said, standing up and quickly shaking his head, trying to avoid the dizziness. Aro took a deep breath. "Look, I know you're probably still mad at me, but I'm here to say, I'm sorry."
"Sorry? Sorry? You tried to kill me! In my own mind! How can I accept an apology now?" Gumball crossed his arms. Aro looked at his feet, and the back at the annoyed blue cat. "Listen, if you don't help me out, there'll be serious consequences for both of us. Let me explain. You see, right now, there is a monster inside your head named Lordue. He feeds of your feelings and emotions until he completely takes over you." Gumball gave him a cold look. "You really expect me to believe that lie? After all you did to me, you now want my help? And even if this thing is real, how do we stop it?" Gumball asked, crossing his arms. "Well, that's the thing. I'm not quite sure." Aro nervously rubbed his arm. Gumball sighed. "I'll deal with this tomorrow." He brushed Aro away. "I need sleep." He jumped into bed and pulled his sheets to his chin.
Aro stood in the middle of the room, looking at Gumball.
"If you don't help me... I'll die."
"As if I needed more reasons to not help you." Gumball grumbled, turning over in his bed.
Aro looked away, than back at the blue cat. "Please— Just this once. I promise if you help me.... I'll leave you alone. Forever."
Gumball liked the sound of that. He sat back up. "Okay, fine. What do you need me to do?"
================
"Hey, dude!" Darwin shook Gumball awake. Gumball groaned and turned over, covering his head with his covers. "What?" He grumbled, shooing Darwin's fin away. "It's Saturday!" Gumball heard Darwin's usual cheery voice. Gumball finally turned back around and sat up, giving up on trying to sleep in. He whipped off his covers and jumped off his bed, grabbing a fresh pair of clothes, and going to the bathroom.
Darwin stood in the room. What is wrong with Gumball? Mood swings, maybe?
Gumball pulled his nightshirt over his head and threw it to the ground, when something caught his eye. In the mirror, he noticed... a row of small black quills down his back. He uneasily swallowed the lump on his throat. A flashback to the last time he'd gotten the small spikes down his back.
