A normal day.
That's how it started.
I had started the day off like any other day I got up had my breakfast, brushed my teeth and hair, got dressed and went to school with my brother and sister.
I was the youngest out of my siblings my brother being the oldest. I was seven at the time, my sister 13 and my brother was 18
My brother had just received his drivers' license so he said he would drive me and Emily to school before going to college. Our schools weren't that far apart so it wasn't going out of his way.
It didn't feel like anything was different and I had no idea that my entire life was about to change.
My morning lessons were the best, I had art and maths and then I had free play. It was my favorite day of the week because I had my favorite teacher Miss Lilly-Jacobs.
My father had gone to work at 9 in the morning just like every other day. He worked with the government officials and their counsel. He had a great job and we had a steady income from his work. It was 2 hours into his shift that he had been called into a meeting with the other council members. During this meeting, it had come to light that the vampires had plans to release their identity and begin a mass take over. His position should have given us an advantage in preparation and escape. If it wasn't for his job we would have been clueless and had no time to prepare ourselves for the devastation that was to come. His council had always been loyal to our family and we were grateful for that. But what he hadn't known at the time was that the revolution of the vampires had already begun and he was losing precious time to save us and himself.
The moment my father heard the news he left his meeting wondering why the other council members hadn't done the same to protect their families. He had hurried home to pack our bags with the necessities we would need. I think he always knew this day would come as it took him no longer than 15 minutes to have everything packed and in his car ready to go.
My mother was at work by the time my father had gotten home. she had started her own flower shop just two years past and what helped was that it was just around the corner from our home. We didn't need the extra money but I think it gave her a sense of purpose rather than just being a stay at home mum.
The moment my father had finished he dove into his car and drove straight to my mothers work as he worried for her safety being out in the open even if he wasn't aware that the danger had already begun she was and always would be his first priority as he loved her dearly. When he arrived he spoke to my mother in a panicked breath, he told her to close up shop and to get in the car as fast as she could.
My mother was in the middle of serving customers who looked at my father in worried confusion, she couldn't understand why he was in such a rush and so panicked but listened to him anyway as she had never seen her beloved like this before and it worried her.
He explained what had happened during the meeting to her as he drove towards my school. I was in the middle of maths when I heard my name being called to the main reception over the intercom telling me to bring all my belongings and that my parents were here to pick me up. Confusion was plastered on my face all the way to the main office. My parents refused to tell me anything as we hurried back to the car. I had no clue where we were going until we had pulled up in front of my sister's secondary school.
My father had told my mother and me to wait in the car whilst he went to collect Emily. I was so confused and kept asking my mother what was going on but she said it was all ok and there was nothing to worry about. She said we were going on holiday to get me to calm down and stop worrying. My sister and father returned to the car minutes later. Emily was wearing the same face of confusion I had earlier. The moment she scrambled into the back seat of the car I bounced around excitedly and told her we were going on holiday. My mother and father exchanged a look before they both confirmed it, Emily then joined in with my excitement.
I knew we were going to go and get Ashley from his college now but I remembered that he drove us to school, and I was confused as to what was going to happen to his car. We pulled up to his college and again my father told us to stay where we were and he would be back as quickly as he could. 20 minutes later I saw my father and brother emerging from the building arguing with each other. Ashley looked scared and angry and he was shouting at my father and my father was shouting back. I couldn't make out what they were saying as it was muffled due to distance and me being in the car. My brother then stormed off and got into his car driving round to us. He watched my father climb back into the driver seat of the vehicle and waited for him to take the lead so he could follow in his car.
Hours later and my father was still driving, I had no idea where we were going but I was excited. We were in the middle of nowhere when my father's car started sputtering. My mother began to panic and my father started swearing. My brother had stopped his two-seater car alongside ours on the road and wanted to know what was happening.
We had run out of gas and there wasn't a petrol station for miles around, we were stranded. That's when my father told us to all get out the car, grab a backpack and to follow him.
We were walking for hours and the sun was starting to set on the horizon. My father had found a small clearing and told us to settle down for the night and we would continue again at first light. I was still thinking we were on an adventure and that all of this had been planned.
Later in the evening just after dusk, my father had created a small fire in which we sat around.
He told us.
He told us what was happening and why we were leaving. I was scared, to say the least, and so was my sister. My brother was just angry and wouldn't say anything.
Hours had gone by and no one had yet to sleep. I myself was really tired but I was too scared to close my eyes. Around 11 o'clock my brother came over to me and cuddled me into his lap letting me know it was okay until I eventually drifted off into a dreamless sleep.
