I stare at the smiling, pretty face turned up at me. "Kate," I whisper. "Kate...."
The girl, or Kate, as it seems, hugs me. "It's okay, Granny. I know what you feel."
I can't hold it anymore. Tears stream down my cheeks as I make a choking sound. My throat tightens at the sight of her face. "But..." I murmur, caressing her straight, dark brown hair, "Why? Why did you do it?"
Her expression changes. "I'm sorry," she whispers, squeezing my hand. She looks into the wilderness, trying to hide her glistening eyes.
"I guess..." Kate mumbles, holding my hand tighter, running her smooth fingers over the engraved lines in my hand. "I couldn't bear it when Mamma and Daddy left..." She starts crying all of a sudden. I reach out a wrinkled hand and wipe her tears with my sleeve.
Holding her close, I get up. "Come with me," I say, gathering my things.
Kate gets up, brushing her tears away. Her red eyes glisten at the sudden sunlight as we come out of the canopy of trees.
I step over a rock when - I unexpectedly crumple to the ground.
A scream penetrates through my ears as I hear footsteps running down. Kate's small, plump hand slides into mine. "Granny," she sniffles. "Oh..."
She runs down the hill, but not before I squeeze her hand and give a small, weak smile.
My head slowly loses its consciousness as I begin an eternal sleep....
And when Kate comes back, she finds a non-breathing woman lying on the rocks. She begins to weep.........
