Arielle’s POV

“BRING! BRING! BRING!” I hit my hand around the small bedside table looking for the off button on my alarm, finally finding it. Today is the first day of the Olympics but because the track and field events don’t start for a few days the track was free to train. I am meeting Mary-Anne at the front of the village at 8.00am and it is now 7.00am. I roll around my bed stretching out my muscles and get up to go into the bathroom for a quick shower. I chuck on my training crop top and a pair of shorts with my track suit over the top and I braid my hair so it’s to the back and out of my face. As I walk down the hall I can hear the house is silent and figure the others are still asleep. I grab a bowl of muesli and fruit, eat it as fast as I can and go back upstairs to brush my teeth, grab my training bag and race out of the apartment. I look down at my watch to see it’s 8.50am, there’s still time I sigh in relief. But as normal no matter how early I am Mary-Anne is always waiting for me.

“Good morning.” I chirp. “You’re awfully cheery today aren’t you?” Mary-Anne says with surprise. “It’s the Olympics, who wouldn’t be cheery?” I ask back and she laughs and ushers me into the car. “Okay so your 100m heats are in three days so we’ll focus more on that today, before going into the 200m.” Mary-Anne informs me and I nod my head while taking in my surroundings. London has always been one of my favourite places, I have been here a few times before to see my family and fell in love instantly.

As we enter the Olympic Stadium I expect to see the set up from last night not completely gone, but it is, every last bit of it. Wow they don’t waste any time here. “Arielle go and put your stuff down and get ready.” Mary-Anne’s voice breaks my daydream. I walk over to a bench to put my shoes on and slip out of my track suit, oh it’s a little chilly put here, I think to myself and start warming up.

After a gruelling four straight hours, Mary-Anne allows me a break. “Hey Arielle.” Mary-Anne calls me over. “Yeah?” I ask her. “I have to go back to the village, you can stay if you want, but you’ll have to get your own ride back.” She tells me and I decide to stay for a bit longer.

I run around the track trying to focus on the speed and length of each stride but I was too tired to keep going. I walk over to my bag looking around me and remember the gym that’s situated in the back of the stadium. I walk around, dodging other athletes and make my way down a corridor which ends up leading me right into the gym. Without thinking I open the door and burst through only to be stopped. “Oh, um, are you using the gym?” I nervously ask the boy with dark brown hair who was currently doing chin-ups. “Oh no, it’s fine come on in, I’m only in here because the one at the aquatics centre was busy.” His thick, posh English accent rings out filling the empty room. So he’s a swimmer, not bad, not bad at all. No stop  Arielle concentrate. “Uh I’m Tom by the way.” The English voice says again. “Hey Tom, I’m Arielle.” I say shaking his hand. Wait why did I shake his hand? Who even shakes hands anymore? I don’t think Tom notices my concern as his firm hand wraps around my small one in a comfortable grip. “So Arielle, what events are you competing in?” Tom asks politely. “Oh I’m not competing I’m just here for fun.” I say smirking. “Huh? Oh, um.. Okay.” He says looking confused. “I’m just kidding, I’m in the 100m sprints, 200m sprint and the women’s 4 x 100m relay.” I reply back smiling and he laughs a little. “Oh okay. You almost had me there.” He says and we break down into a fit of laughter, I’m not sure what is so funny though? “So Tom what do you compete in?” I ask, calming myself down. “I dive in the men’s 10m platform and men’s synchronised 10m platform.” He says. “Oh so you’re a diver.” I say nodding in approval.

“Anyway I think I’m going to head back to the village now, I’ll see you around, yeah?” Tom asks gathering his things. “Yeah you will, but I think I’m gonna pack up now as well.” I say also collecting my stuff. “I can give you a lift back to the village if you want?” Tom offers and I graciously accept.

“So is this your first Olympics?” I ask Tom as he starts the car and pulls out onto the road. “No my second actually, I competed in Beijing when I was 14, what about you?” He replies. “Yeah this is my first Olympics. But wow 14, that’s incredible. Hey that means you’re 18 now right.” I ask him. “It sure does.” He smiles at me, flashing his extremely straight, white teeth. “Well I’m 18 as well.” I smile back, happy we have something in common, even if it is just our age.

The rest of the car ride consisted of us getting to know each other a bit better, considering we were pretty much strangers. “Hey Arielle, do you mind if I get your number?” Tom asks kindly. “Yeah sure.” I say and we exchange phones, before swapping back and getting out of the car.

“Thanks for the ride Tom.” I say whilst reaching into the boot of the car to be my bag. “No worries, it was nice meeting you.” Tom replies smiling. “Same to you.” I answer and we give each other a kind of awkward hug thing, before laughing and walking off into different directions to our rooms. Today was fun, I wonder if I will end up seeing Tom around again?
