angst, clean
What you thought would be a pleasant autumn day was now spun on its edge. The trigger had been relatively simple - something innocuous to everyone else, but unleashing a deeply-rooted fear inside yourself. That was the thing about triggers; they were small, but even the smallest touch could snowball out of control.
You hoped and prayed the rush of adrenaline would be enough. Maybe anxiety would be satisfied with that. When your hands started to shake, you knew it was only the beginning. By the time you finally managed to return home, it was all you could do to lean back against the nearest wall and slide down to the floor.
Time was incoherent. You had no grasp of how long you sat there, focused only on the tremendous invisible weight on your chest that made you choke for air. Though you could hear your phone dinging with a number of texts, the idea of reaching into your purse to find the source seemed too exhausting at the moment.
When the adjacent door swung open loudly, you whimpered, eyes wide as you knew only one other person had a key to the apartment. Jaebeom took a solid look at you, saw your chest heave as you hyperventilated, and all of his instincts kicked in.
"Whoa, what happened?" he asked softly, moving at a calm pace to sit before you as he stifled his own panic.
The sight of his hands reaching for you was a welcome one and you didn't hesitate to grasp his fingers tightly, letting him anchor you to the world. Rather than answer, you shook your head rapidly and focused on your short inhales that still failed to sate your starving lungs.
Jaebeom let you lace your fingers through his, his gaze fervently on you as you studied the floor. Sidling a little closer until his knees bumped your legs, he murmured, "You're okay, baby. I'm right here."
"I... can't," you rasped, shuddering with terror at the sensation of suffocating made even worse by the fact that nothing was visibly choking you.
Jaebeom's voice softened, airy as a gentle song when he replied, "I'm here. No one can hurt you."
You nodded, tears pricking at your eyes. His words reminded you that there was no place on earth where you felt safer than with Jaebeom. In his arms, you felt invincible, untouchable.
Jaebeom released your hands and cupped your cheeks tenderly, guiding you to turn your attention to his face. His eyes were intense, as you knew them to perpetually be, but you found peace in them because they were firm and secure. Jaebeom had the uncanny ability to convey so much with such a simple gaze.
Brushing his thumbs over your skin, Jaebeom whispered, "Take a deep breath."
It was an easy command, but felt like the hardest thing to do. Nevertheless, you managed.
"Good," your boyfriend crooned, swiping his finger through a tear that escaped your lashes. "You're doing great."
With life in general, Jaebeom had very little patience, but with you it was endless. If he had to sit on the floor with you and cradle you in his arms for the rest of the day, he would do it without question.
A few more prompts from him to take a deep breath began to pay off. Jaebeom could feel you relaxing in his hands, your inhales beginning to level out as the trembling subsided. When the tension dissipated, he saw clarity fill your eyes.
"Thank you," you murmured softly, warmth burning through your body.
Jaebeom smiled and pulled you toward him, leaving the purest of kisses on your forehead. "I got you. Always," he whispered, tucking you to his chest and letting you hold onto him for as long as you needed.
