Of the door.
Before Valerie could pull the trigger, Nathan had busted in with a whole team who instantly got the gun out of her hand. She was quickly cuffed as Nathan and his men kept on saying things in police-code-gibberish. Everything was so loud and chaotic, Matt and Steph couldn't even think to focus. There was too much going on. Matt caught Valerie's eye as she was being pulled out of the room. She was smiling. But not manically, no. It was a kind smile, a sweet one. Something genuine.
Matt almost hated himself for thinking it, but it had actually hit him, Maybe, with the right help and people, she might have a chance. But he shook it off just as quickly.
Two other cops helped up Matt and Steph, wrapping a blanket around them as a third attempted to speak to them, but they were clearly not good for conversation. He tried to get Steph out, but she swiped at him, refusing to let go of Matt. Because of that, they were both down there for a little while longer while the men worked on getting Matt's foot loose, and the whole time, they both stared at Cora's dead body until someone finally had the decency to move it.
When it was done, the police brought them both up to an ambulance that was waiting for them. Some tests would have to be done, of course, but even at the hospital, the couple REFUSED to let go of each other, and would barley talk unless totally necessary, and even then, only in one-word answers at best. They hung onto each other like life preservers in the sea of quelling chaos.
Finally, they were cleared to leave. Nathan was waiting outside.
"I'm aware that you're not feeling up to conversation, so I'll cut to the chase. There's still a lot more paperwork that we have to do, but I know that you both probably want to get home. I talked to the men, and we'd prefer if you had someone drive you both home. I volunteered."
Matt nodded a quick thanks, and he and Steph got in the car. Matt and Steph fell asleep fast, both exhausted, until they reached home, when Nathan woke them up. They got up groggily, but got out of the car, then went into the house, Steph and Matt both giving Nathan a quick nod in response. He didn't move the car. Well, they had just gotten out of a kidnapping situation. Of course he would want to keep an eye on the house.
Inside the house, Steph, now feeling a bit better, finally spoke up. "Matthew, you know I love you-"
He finished her sentence. "-But you kind of just want to sleep?"
"Yeah. Can we do that, and then celebrate in the morning?"
Matt paused, then smiled. "Of course." He yawned. "I could use some too. Then in the morning, I think we both deserve pancakes."
Steph giggled sleepily. "And diet coke?" She said, leaning her head into his chest. Matt started to stroke her hair, wanting to fall into her as well.
"That sounds good too." Matt said. "We should get upstairs."
"We really should."
They didn't that night. In fact, they had both fallen asleep on the couch, fully dressed, down to the shoes, curled up in each other's arms.
The next morning, they kept their promises. Pancakes and diet coke. They took the next few weeks off of work, almost a month, the whole time being as lovey-dovey as they could. Of course they did, they deserved it. They deserved it so much that the insane woman who resorted to kidnapping to break them apart realised that they deserved each other.
Finally, they were ready to get back to work, almost a month later. Steph sat down on the couch next to Matt, the two of them smiling at each other as if it was the day they were married. They placed their hands over each other's, then Matt looked at Jason. After a few seconds of that familiar jingle, Matt took one more look at his wife, before finally addressing the audience.
"Hello interest, and welcome to GTLive."
The End.
*Sort of. I actually have one more bonus chapter after this. Mostly because I wanted to focus on something with Nathan real quick, but Steph will make an appearance too, so just you wait!*
