After everything, Hermione was going back to Hogwarts — After all, education was the most important thing for Hermione. She was going on the Hogwarts express without Harry and Ron, which felt very new, new in a bad way. Hermione sighed, waiting for the train to come and Ginny rubbed her shoulder.
"Everything is going to be so peaceful at hogwarts." Said Hermione, looking at Ginny. "But I'm still afraid — what if something else happens? I mean — "
"Hermione, calm down. Nothing's going to happen, really." Said Ginny.
Hermione looked at her red-headed friend, then smiled. I'm so lucky to have friends like her, she thought. As she looked at Ginny, she made her think of Ron. The kiss... what was it for? They weren't dating, and to be honest, Hermione wasn't sure if she really had feelings for him. She tore her eyes from Ginny, then moved her eyes to the train, which has just arrived.
"Look! The train is here!" Said Ginny, pulling Hermione and her cart.
The two girls rushed towards the train. Ginny hopped on to the train. Hermione was about to push her cart on the train, but it was a little too heavy for her to do. Ron and Harry would have helped her if they were here, and that made her think of Ron again. She waved her thoughts away when someone pushed her cart onto the train.
She turned around to see Malfoy, Draco Malfoy pushing her cart onto the train.
"Hi Granger." He said.
He looked rather pale — even paler than before. It looked like he haven't been eating for days, but still his neat hair was styled perfectly. His narrow eyes looked rather sad than before. Above all, it was a surprising thing for Draco Malfoy to do: Helping others.
Malfoy had said 'Hi' to Hermione, but she didn't quite get why, or how to reply.
"Hi." Said Hermione, still not knowing what to say.
"Hermione, come on." She heard Ginny say, and she hurried up to chase up with Ginny.
Everywhere was full except for one room, which was completely empty. Ginny opened the door and walked inside.
"Finally, I feel like being at home." Said Ginny. "I mean, my second home. I love my family too, but you know what I'm talking about, eh, 'Mione?"
Hermione smiled and nodded.
"Oh and congratulations for being head girl! You really deserve it." Ginny added.
A week before, Hermione had recieved a letter from Miss Mcgonagall that she was the new head girl. Hermione was so proud and quite worried at the same point.
"Who is the head boy?"
"No idea."
"Who do you think it will be?"
"No idea."
Then there was a noise out side of the door, and a familiar voice said:
"Anything off the trolli dear?""No thanks," said Hermione. "I had enough breakfast."
"Well then." The woman rolled her pack of sweets to the next room.
She leaned to her seat, and start to think about things that kept crawling into her mind.
Ron,
Head Girl,
And Malfoy, who has changed...Ron — he wasn't her boyfriend, and Hermione didn't have that much feelings for him — but if she liked Harry in a brother sort of way, she liked Ron as a... she didn't quite know how she felt for Ron. Not like a brother, but not as a man... just the middle. And Ron didn't seem to care about the kiss at all, all he did was eating after the war.
Being a Head girl — it felt like taking a big, big test for a semester. What if she messed up? What if the Head boy and she had a lot of conflicts? What if she was so bad at the job, another girl was replaced? Even though she knew these were all unnecessary worries, she wasn't able to stop thinking about it.
Draco Malfoy —
She really didn't care about him before, but the look on his eyes, those deep gray eyes... she had never seen it on his eyes before. He looked depressed, more than just depressed — sad, and awfully worried. Well, after all, his father was sent to Azkaban, but still.
Maybe later, She could ask Ginny about Ron's feelings. She could be at hogwarts and start being headgirl, not afraid anymore. And maybe... she can ask Malfoy about the look in his eyes.
——
After all the ceremonies (sorting, and the feast) Hermione sleepily said goodbye to Ginny and walked towards her new dormitory , the head's dorm. She still didn't know who the head boy was — until she saw Malfoy getting inside.
Malfoy.
Malfoy?
Malfoy!
"Get out of there, Malfoy!" She yelled.
The boy stopped, turned around with a curiosity on his face. His face looked healthier than at the morning. Hermione guessed: Maybe the feast helped him recover whatever that was wrong with him.
"So it's you," he said. "The head girl."
Granger nodded.
"Now, I don't know how you got the password, but I'm afraid that dorm is only allowed to the head girl and head boy —"
She stopped.
She saw the young Malfoy smirk, and replying, "Yes, Granger. I'm your new room mate."
"You — Head boy? That can't be true." She squeaked. She had hated Draco Malfoy for such a long time, and now she had to use the same room with him.
"Well, it is, Miss Granger." Came a voice from behind. Professer McGonagall was talking with her face smiling. "I was just passing by, don't worry." She said, and went down the stairs again, humming.
"See?" Said Draco. "Now let's get inside, I'm very exhausted."
Weird, thought Hermione.
Weird that the professors chose a Malfoy as a Head boy, and that Malfoy was so kind to her. Too kind to her, actually.
Draco pushed Hermione gentley on her back.
"I think I can walk on my own, thanks." Said Hermione coldly.
"British Pillow," Said Malfoy, and the door opened. "Weird password, isn't it?" He asked.
Hermione didn't answer.
After both of them were all prepared to sleep, Hermione headed to the girl's dorm. She closed all the curtains and flicked her wand to make the blankets cover her properly.
Then, someone creaked the door open.
"Lumos," said the visitor. The thick accent and husky voice told at once that it was Draco Malfoy. "Why is it too dark in here?"
"Malfoy!" Hissed Hermione.
She sat up, covering her loose pajamas with her blanket. Draco's eyes laid on her body for a second, but he tore his eyes away soon.
"Granger, I just came to tell you something." He said.
"What?" Spat Hermione.
"That I —" he hesitated. "That I didn't have a choice. It might sound funny to you , yes, I understand. But really, I was born as a Malfoy, which meant I had no choice. But — but that now my father has gone to Azkaban — not that I'm happy with it — now I have my own choices. I think it will be, ugh, cool, to be friends with you. Now that we use the same dormitory... you know what I mean?"
Hermione stared at his eyes. Was he telling the truth? He looked around, clearly not sure where to lay his eyes on.
"Um.. Okay." She replied, in a much softer tone. "Oh, and I'm so sorry for your father."
Sorry? Sorry for a Malfoy? She should be glad about it! But she had this weird feeling — his eyes didn't seem to be cold anymore.
"Uh... yeah, it's okay." He muttered. "So are we friends?"
"Sure."
He smirked, but not in a bad way.
