CHAPTER 10
YOLA, ADAMAWA STATE
Jamaal was starting to get really frustrated and the heat he was under wasn't helping matter. He has just left the mosque and was taking a long route home.
Yesterday was one of the worst days of his life. He met like a hundred girls following his grandma's order and no one could save him. Even though he agreed to marry another girl, his grandma couldn't know. But he was trying to rethink if it was worth it. The girls, there was nothing wrong with the, some were trying too hard, they didn't even know anything about him.
He knew the first thing people described about him were his good looks and money and he was more than that. A lot more than that. He needed someone that didn't see those things. And Yola is a small state with small minded people, not all the girls went to school and all they looked for was security in a man. The comfort he could give them. He wants someone independent, strong and fearless. He has no problem taking care of women, hell he knows he will spoil his wife, because if not what will he do with his money. All he is after is love. If he could he would have bought it, and trust me in such a small world you can buy love with money. But love is strong and it runs deeper than that. (I should become a poet, right?)
He was now close to the house and greeted all those men he met on the way. Immediately he entered the house he went straight to his room with the intention of sleeping till Asr. Surprisingly, he met Labeeb waiting for him. They shook hands.
'Is everything okay?' he asked as he led them into his room
'Yeah, but I've got news. Which one do you want to hear first, the good or the bad?'
'Seriously? I can't take anymore girls please I'm tired'
'Not more, just one. Laila'
'What?'
'Yeah apparently she nominated herself to marry you and her folks are coming over with her later in the day'
'Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun'
Labeeb laughed at his brother. He did feel sorry for him. He came home to spend time with his family not to go through this.
'Well the good news is that you've got a letter. From Atiku center. Might be an opportunity to escape all this. But for now rest, you'll figure everything out'. He gave him the letter and left.
Jamaal laid down on his bead. He couldn't think of a reason as to why Lailah would want to come back. Especially not to marry him. They had a thing before he went back to London but it didn't end well.
He has had a crush on Lailah since they were kids and well she hadn't noticed him ever. Until he finished med school and well you know what puberty did to him. When she started talking to him he was on top of the world. He did everything she wanted and became more of what she wanted. The person he spent his life yearning to be was little by little fading. Until he didn't know who he was anymore. He stopped going to work, staying with his family. He was in a really dark place and it was hard for him to leave. Lailah was not always like that, she was the nice naïve pretty girl that all the men wanted. But he loved her shyness, politeness and she was mart. But people only saw her pretty face. At the time when he was in med school she went abroad too to study interior decoration. She came back before him and well at that period was when she changed. That's why he knew he couldn't marry a naïve village girl, he wouldn't stay in Yola forever and he is afraid of what such exposure could do.
Their relationship didn't stop there. After he got himself back up he went for a program in India that lasted a year and when he came back his head was clear, but she was still the same. He tried to make her cover up her body, talk more politely, and behave more like the Muslim Fulani woman she is. But when it got out of control he broke it off. He found out she was seeing someone behind his back and to her, he Jamaal was just business. Apparently he was too holy for her. Well good riddance. He was relieved but he was hurt of how someone could just use someone like that. He didn't want to experience anything like that ever.
xXx
Jamaal woke up after Asr, so he prayed in his room and as he was about to leave he saw the letter and opened it.

Well, that was impressive. He knew he wasn't going though, he came to spend time with his family and not work. He kept the letter aside and went down. He heard some voices and remembered that Lailah's family was coming.
'Jamaal won't you come down?'....he froze
He calmed down immediately he saw his uncle and the parents of the girl he was to marry. He came down with a smile and greeted them. Turns out they were about to leave Yola. They had a wedding in Abuja or so. He bade them farewell and went back to the rest of his family.
