Chapter 1
Marinette raced around her family's bakery kitchen, tossing various ingredients into a silver mixing bowl while her kwami chased her around with many questions. "Marinette, why are you in such a rush? We have time." Tikki consoled her, her kind words barely reaching Marinette before she automatically dismissed them. "Tikki, there's no way I'll finish Alya's cake in time! I shouldn't have stayed up so late designing! I'm the worst friend ever, she is going to hate me forever." She popped back into her panic of racing the clock, pouring the cocoa powder into the batter and grabbing her pink spatula to fold in the chocolate.
"She won't hate you, Marinette! You're her best friend, if you tell her you didn't have time, she will understand." Tikki reassured Marinette, knowing that she got anxious quickly and made promises her priority. Marinette finally stopped and put her head down to look at the hastily made cake batter. Between last night's akuma attack and her new, exciting assignment for Jagged Stone, she was so tired that she didn't wake up until two hours before her best friend's party.
Marinette set down her baking equipment, trading it for her phone to call Alya in defeat and with each ring, she grew more and more nervous. Marinette was secretly hoping that her best friend would be too busy planning her party to pick up the phone, but, of course, she answered. "Hey, girl! What's up? Oooh, I need to tell you about my new idea for the Ladyblog, it's absolutely necessary I get your feedback!" Alya rambled, she often went on a tangent on every call that the two had but unfortunately for her, this one brought bad news. "So um, Alya," She stumbled over her words while she hoped that she would understand, "I kinda- well you see last night I was fight- er hiding from the akuma attack and then I had to start on that design for Jagged's new album and I-I didn't realize the time so I.." sighing, she took Tikki's advice and continued with honestly, "I couldn't finish your cake and I know I made a promise, I'm the worst friend ever, I can't believe this happened, It's totally my fault. I'm sorry, Alya." She placated with her apology. Marinette knew she must have ruined her best friend's special day, after all, where were they supposed to find a replacement cake on such short notice?
"Marinette, I'm just glad you are okay, I think last night was the worse attack so far, but don't worry, I think I have an idea to fix this!" Alya exclaimed to comfort her worried best friend.

A hot box of her maman's famous chocolate croissants bumped up and down in the taxi seat next to Marinette, accompanied by another one full of raspberry macaroons in her lap. The idea of these treats instead of the traditional birthday cake was unconventional, but so was Alya, and Marinette could expect that her party would be the same way. When she stepped out of the yellow car onto the street in front of Alya's apartment, she could already hear her best friend's favorite song blaring so loud, the neighbors might have moved out that same night. She thanked the driver, a regular customer, by handing him a baked good from the top box in her arms.
Marinette pulled her cardigan closer to her body as she felt the cold air fly in with a swift breeze; she wasn't prepared for autumn to take over the weather. She would miss the warm summers in Paris, besides she could no longer go to the pool and see Adrien in his swimsuit. The very idea turned her face so beat red, she was suddenly glad for the cooldown so that she didn't look like a baboon's behind when she saw Alya. Her best friend had already known about her longtime crush on the famous model but she hated her teasing about 'adrienette', which was their so-called ship name. She tried to clear her head as she approached the red-brick apartment building, looking through one of the many windows, she saw her best friend dancing around with her own crush, Nino. She pushed him away to wave at Marinette while jumping all around with a goofy smile which Marinette returned.
She was immediately let inside the door after just one knock but stopped in her tracks when she saw who was holding the handle-Adrien. Her eyes went wide and she was afraid that the same bright rouge would once again stain her cheeks because of that million dollar smile. "Hey, Marinette! Oooh, are those pastries from your bakery? Yum, get in here, I can't wait to dig into them, if they came from your place, they must be amazing!" He must have been the brightest thing in all of Paris in that moment, at least to Marinette, he could outshine the sun but she had to come back to earth to refrain from becoming a drooling, stammering mess. "H-hi Adrien, um yeah they are, I have chocolate croissants which I know are your favorite- or I mean I t-think uh- I heard they were in a magazine-not that I read those silly interviews about you- not that you're silly, you are perfectly fine! I just meant those magazines are totally for like obsessed teenage girls." Marinette squealed out, then mentally face-palmed because of her total mess up in front of the cutest guy she had ever seen. "Chocolate croissants? Awesome! Thanks, Marinette, let me help you with the boxes." He offered to help and she gladly accepted with a quiet hum, letting him take his favorites over to a table full of snacks.
