Chapter 3
"Well, I heard from a little birdie that you were near the attack today, and I've been employed to check up on you, purrincess." Chat's charming words would make any girl swoon, especially because he added a bow at the end as if he was standing before actual royalty. His dark suit almost made him disappear into the midnight sky but his contrasting bright blond hair reminded Marinette that he was still very much right there on her balcony, with a mission nonetheless.
"Employed? Who would send a tomcat like you to my balcony?" After those words came out of her mouth, she turned her head, blushing at her forwardness. She almost forgot she was Marinette and not Ladybug, for she only spoke to the silly chat in that same playful way but now she was a whole other person. Ladybug was totally different than Marinette, Marinette wasn't confident, she couldn't hop from building to building, she wasn't a hero or anything remotely special at all but something about the cat brought out the bug in her, the part that didn't come from Tikki.
In response, chat's classic smirk made a reappearance, brightening up his deep, emerald eyes. "Uh...My friend Adrien told me to check up on you. He said that he didn't see you after the akuma attack and wanted to make sure you were okay." He quickly covered up the real reason to protect his identity and noticed Marinette's smile grow ten times at the mention of Adrien's name. "He sent you to check up on me? Really? Wait Adrien is friends with-er you are friends with him?"
Chat simply nodded, trying to keep up his lie casually, he thought it better to not continue lying unless she asked questions because he could feel the guilt of looking his friend in the eyes and lying to her, the feeling that hadn't gone away for the years he had been living his double life. Chat looked out onto the dark streets of Paris, feeling the cool air blow on his chat ears, this particular night was extremely quiet assumedly because the citizens of the city were calming down from the attack earlier that day. He hadn't realized how beautiful the view from her balcony really was, even though he had been there before, he hadn't taken the time to breathe it all in. He perched up on the railing to look out on the city he protected and sighed, exhausted from the day, he didn't seem to notice Marinette sneak up and lean against the bar next to him.
"I am okay, by the way, but I'm not sure I can say the same about you." She noted as she turned her gaze toward him right as he returned it, with wide eyes then finally let out a deep breath that felt like he had been holding in for a long time. Chat bit his tongue, trying desperately to contain the word vomit inching so close to his lips. He knew that it was too late, that she had already seen right through his emotional mask and he felt more vulnerable than if she were to rip off his real mask to expose who he really was without the superpowers. In reality, that was his greatest fear, next to coming clean with how he was really feeling.
"I might just agree with you, purrincess. I'm not feline too great. My lady doesn't seem to feel the same way I do." He admitted, Marinette seemed so easy to talk to, maybe it was because Chat noir didn't see Marinette every day, even if Adrien did, he wouldn't have to deal with the consequences of Chat's silly confessions tomorrow. "How did you know I was down?" He questioned.
"I guess I just have a sixth sense for unrequited love," Marinette shrugged "Anyway, I'm sorry she doesn't return your feelings. Maybe she just.. Isn't the one for you?" She wasn't completely clueless, she knew that her alter ego was the one who stole Chat's heart and she couldn't help but feel guilty that she was the reason he felt this way.
"Maybe. I don't know, I feel like I spent so long believing that she was my soulmate or something...It seems so hard to think about a future without her. I don't why I'm telling you this, you barely know me." He let out everything he could at the moment, a rushed and ill-advised admission that had taken just a few seconds to completely expose his deepest secret, deeper than the face under the mask. All of those emotions that had been building up for as long as he had known Ladybug had just spilled onto his classmate's balcony, someone who didn't even realize who he was.
They both took a breath to let the heaviness settle, for Chat it was in his throat but Marinette could feel it in her heart. Her mind and heart could finally agree on something and that thing was that she was a terrible person. He had fallen in love with me? She thought, I never knew it was that serious. I guess he has a broken heart too, those words, I feel like that with Adrien. She couldn't help but blame herself, in her mind she was worse than hawkmoth for making her partner, one of Paris' heroes, and the kindest cat she knew heartbroken.
"I know how you feel." She piped up, not only to console him but to break the uncomfortable silence.
"You do?" There was an honest shock in his voice, Marinette liked someone? Could it have been someone from school? He hadn't notice anyone that she was shy around, usually, he could spot these things since he thought he was pretty observant. She hummed a positive reply and turned around so that her lower back was pressed against the railing and just stood, letting the autumn wind bend around her.
"And it sucks." Marinette walked to the ladder and climbed down it, leaving Chat alone with the most beautiful view he had ever seen on the most painful night of his life.
