The Woman in Lace
(a poem)

there was a woman
who never showed her face
her eyes were cloaked
her mouth hung in disdain
if one tried to remove her cover
she screamed and fought and ran from that place
"that," people said, "was just that woman in lace."

people tended to leave her alone
and that was okay
as long as her cover wasn't blown
and her features weren't shown
for then her mask would be displaced
and she would be known

one day one dared to plot a plan
to take off that lace
and show that woman's face.
the town agreed
and were filled with greed
so as she was passing by the designated spot
those townspeople continued on with that cruel plot
and unmasked her

it was more valuable than gold
and sweeter than molasses
her angelic features
spoke of secrets and stories untold
