It all started on a warm sunny afternoon day. Wario was sitting at a small cafe table with his coworker, Sonic the Hedgehog. They were just discussing their new jobs at Nintendo, all their new and old coworkers, and how everything when Sonic struck him with a startling question. "Hey how's your brother doin' dude? I didn't see him in the roster this year, hope he's doin' fly." It took me a moment to respond, "He's doing well I suppose." The truth is, I hadn't seen my brother in weeks. I didn't even know how he was doing. Sonic though, blindingly positive and unaware as usual, just gave me the thumbs up. "That's great to hear dude!" He looked over at his wrist to check his watch, "Look, I gotta blast, but I'll check you later ok?" I smiled back, and with a wave and a blink of an eye, he took one last swing of his coffee and was gone.
It's not unusual for me to be the last at the coffee shop, waiting for something to happen. After work, almost all of my coworkers meet at some restaurant or café before heading home. Some only stay a few minutes, others, like me, may stick around for hours. Of course, some people I work with, like Sonic, can get home so fast or easily they don't need to worry about traffic or subway lines. You don't need to worry about a car when you can just fly home like Pit.
After sitting at the small coffee table for ten more minutes, I managed to pick myself up and mosey over to the subway. I quietly enjoyed the steady
tha-thump. tha-thump. tha-thump of the subway system. Between my job being so chaotic and my brother being so unresponsive, it was a lot to balance. Besides the obvious fighting that's actually part of the job, there's a lot of gossip too. Who's the strongest? Who's the most popular? Who hates who? And more importantly, who's dating who? It's crazy to keep track, at least I have Sonic to keep me up to date. He's always ahead of the game on gossip. I'm not to involved with all that though. Sure I go the parties that people like Mario and Fox hold, but mostly out of politeness. I know Mario being my cousin and all wants me to get involved, but with my brother being so absent from my life it's hard. I do try though, I hang out when people ask, I attend the traditional Hyrulian ceremonies that Link and Zelda host, or when Captain Falcon, who we just call Captain, wants to have workout session with Ryu, I come. But it's still hard. It's hard emotionally. And I'm not sure how much I can take.
I arrived home finally at 11:30 PM. I checked my phone to see if anyone texted me, no one. But I didn't put down my phone. Not yet. I pondered for several minutes, should I call him? I wanted to, I wanted so badly to hear his voice, feel him near. But I knew I couldn't, could I? I stared for minutes longer, unsure of what to do. I decided that tonight was not the night, and that i would try again tomorrow. I quickly had a bowl of cereal, brushed my teeth, and hit the hay. Tomorrow was a big day, it was sectioning and checkup, and I needed to be well rested.
