Hopeless

A big fat red F  glared at me, as I disappointedly reviewed my science test. Another fail. And before I knew it, I was out the class door, tears streaming down my eyes, as I headed for the boy's bathroom.

"Xavier?" I could hear Mrs. Cheryl's voice calling my name, but I ignored it.

My ears burned bright scarlet, as I heard humiliating laughter coming from the class.

Then, I didn't.

Now, all I could hear was the sound of my feet, tap, tap, tap, as they carried me further away from misery.

I slammed the bathroom door shut, and stood in the corner, heart pounding.

I was a useless boy, incapable of anything, born without a destiny.

Snickers were heard as I came back into the classroom, and I quietly forced myself to keep calm.

I landed myself on my seat, right next to Sally's. Her eyes darted towards me, and gave me a dirty look.

"Hey little boy," She whispered.

My face turned bright purple, and I squirmed uncomfortably as she giggled.

Sally has been with me in school ever since 1st grade, and each year, it gets even worse. I remember in third grade, when I had came over to her house to stay while my parents were away, and her mother made us noodle casserole. One bite of it was enough to make me vomit. I had politely (kind of) told Sally and her mom, that I wasn't hungry. Sally had yelled, "My momma made this just for you and I, and now you're tellin' us you don't like it! Get out of here!" She had pushed me out the door, leaving me there alone, crying. I never went over to her house again, after that.

Mom was there for me, like always, when I came back home. The aroma of chocolate chip cookies wafted from the door.

Tempted, I rushed to her, and flew into her arms, for a hug.

"How did the science test go?" My mom handed me a cookie.

I shamefully handed her the paper, and she looked at me sympathetically.

"It's okay, Xavier."

She always says that.

That night, I climbed into my bed, turned the lights off, thinking about the horrible days to come.

Like always.
