Chapter 2

"Ella?" His voice that I had grown familiar with over the past year, the one that I secretly prayed I would come back to at the end of my missions was making me queasy right about now. "Is this my partner?"

He looked at Gavin with that piercing glare of his. I knew he was trying to avoid looking at me and I was trying to do the same with him.

I stared at Gavin too, my eyes narrowing into lethal slits. He taught me everything there is to know but here's hoping his defense isn't his strong point.

"Wait, you guys didn't know?" Gavin sounded amused. I would like to see how amused he is when there's a fork lodged between his shoulders. "When I was your age, I was just trying to hide the fact that we were dating several people at once."

" I know. 'In the golden days,' I've heard this many times before. What is Mason doing here?" I was shouting at this point. I needed answers, pronto.

"Ella, Ella, Ella. Maybe you really did lose your touch. Even your boy here was able to figure this out. Meet your partner," He gestured to Mason and then back to me. "Mason, this is Ella. Ella, Mason." He smiled and scooted over to the door. "I'll let you two get acquainted."

When Gavin finally shut the door and left us to ourselves, Mason turned his attention to me. "Is this what you've been keeping from me?" he asked. "What about our date tonight?"

The date. Of course he would still be worried about that. Not, 'what the hell, why didn't tell me that you were secretly an assassin who kills people for money!'. But then again, that would be hypocrital of him to say.

"What about it? I was going to come here, chat for a while, then head on over. It would be as if nothing happened."

"But your... father. He's the one who has been assigning me these tasks?" he demanded. As if I would know the answer.

"Why don't you ask him? Apparently he's pretty tight with you, even though he has never bothered learning your name." I'm sure Mason turned fifty shades of red. I mean, I have to admit, I was kind of drifting away from him. Nothing that I felt would be a big deal... It was for his own safety and protection.

"He has! Agent 1624. He contacts me through this cell phone and everything..." I gave him a very confused look. Gavin has never done that for me. He never went through all these precautions, like the ones he was doing for Mason. Was Mason new to this?

"How long have you been hiding this secret from me?" I asked him. I was now looking out the window, trying to make his answer seem like it wouldn't affect me. I wanted to know how long I had been lied to.

"A couple of months... Maybe a few years, max. I received this cell phone one day and was given secret missions since. I took a couple of karate classes as a child and you could say that they definitely helped when it came to this. My parents just said this was something I have to do and said no more."

"That's... weird. You haven't been trained practically your whole entire life to do this?" I asked.

"Life?!" he asked, rather loudly if you ask me. "You have? How is it like? Did you like poke people with your plastic spoon as a child?"

"Now's not the joking time. We have a mission to discuss," I told him. Since I never worked with a partner, I didn't know what to begin with. All I know is that I have to cooperate. If we had a grudge against each other, how were we supposed to work together? We'd end up both getting killed; this guy we were trying to kill must be dangerous if it required two people.

"But what about us?" he asked. "I have so many questions for you. You got to ask me some, it's my turn now."

I sighed dramatically. Then I turned to look at him with a piercing glare that I know he hates because he said it puts a crease between my eyebrows. "We aren't playing twenty questions. We need to get this done. If you wouldn't mind, how about I go ask Gavin about this?"

I was heading for the door but Mason stopped me. "That's my question. Gavin, your father? He sets these up for both of us?"

I guess I did owe him something... I didn't know how long we were going to stay together soon after this mission. I wanted to have no regrets.

"He's not really my father... My real one was killed when I was six along and my mother... disappeared. I don't even know anymore, the story has changed so many times. Gavin has just been taking care of me since then. They're old friends."

"That's... impossible. I think." I sighed. Why doesn't he understand?

"How is it impossible? I think it's impossible that you're still alive with only karate knowledge behind you. I think it's impossible that you haven't realized it was Gavin until now. I think it's impossible that you-"

"Ella, stop it." The door opened and Gavin entered, with a letter in his hand. "The letter in my hand enholds the mission that you two are about to embark on. I need you to study it and grasp as much information as possible. It's vital to you two. I'm going to explain some things to Marcus over here, so may you leave the room Ella?"

I snorted. "Um, it's Mason, sir," he said with a bit of hesitation in his voice.

"I know," Gavin said, giving him a warm smile.

Listening to my given instructions, I childishly stomped out of the room before they started talking.  Very mature. Whatever, I didn't even want to know what they were talking about anyways. I was about to study the letter very thoroughly just so I could wait until he cooled down, but at this point I wasn't sure what could blow him up.

Walking back towards my bedroom, my hands were literally shaking in anticipation as I wondered what was between the envelope.

What sort of mission would this be? How would it affect the relationship I have with Mason? Did it really have to be him of all people? Would I be able to handle this alone, given the fact that I was able to convince Gavin?

There were so many unanswered questions and in the end, I figured, it couldn't be that bad. I've killed plenty of bad guys and I was still alive. Mason had probably killed a couple of his own and he doesn't even have an injury!

We could handle this, easy peasy.

So why was I so scared?

I closed the door of my bedroom when I got there and flopped down on my king-sized bed. This room doesn't have as much accesories as the one that I keep for school simply because there was nothing to hide. I had a couple of knives on plaques on the wall as well as guns hidden in my bedside dresser. My closet itself was half clothes and half assassin weapons.

I studied the envelope. I've received loads of these before, usually starting with a cheque with a certain amount of money already given to me. I felt the creases of the envelope; no cheques here.

Everyone hides their identity and this person was no exception. It had no return address but what was weird was it wasn't addressed to Gavin either. That would mean this person hand-delivered the letter, which people don't do very often. Nevertheless, I flipped it over.

Taking a deep breath, I put my finger under the flap. Then I quickly slid it across, opening the envelope in the process.

And then, I started reading it.
