CHAPTER 4:

Across the room a boy laid on the ground, a bullet in his head and a guard standing over him, gun still held up. Derek sighed; he turned back to his recruits only to find all of them had stopped and eyeing the situation across the room. "Back to work recruits!" Derek yelled, which was soon echoed by the other training officers in the room.

Derek watched the recruits get back to fighting instead of watching two guards pull the lifeless body of the boy out of the room. The recruits were still throwing their punches and doing everything correctly but Derek could see they were all tense and definitely not focused enough to be fighting so he dismissed them all.

Aubree felt sick as she walked back towards the dorms with her group. How could everyone turn a blind eye? How could they kill so easily? She couldn't help but wonder what her brother had thought of this. Was he as disgusted as her about this whole thing? Was that why he left? Because he didn't like the way things were here?

Aubree found herself pushing her food around her plate and picking at it rather than eating at dinner, while listening to the conversation around her. No one was really talkative with what they had just seen but some talked about random things like family or their favorite things. She didn't feel like talking, no matter how many times someone tried to pull her into the conversation.

Later that night she tried her best to stay awake because she still didn't feel safe falling asleep in this place but eventually exhaustion won over and she fell asleep. She woke from nightmares and didn't allow herself to fall back asleep. She didn't want to go to breakfast but knew she had to start eating soon or she'd end up passing out.

Training was basically the same in the morning; Derek went over a couple of scenarios and was pleased when everyone was doing well so he finished with telling them the actual protocols they had to follow. After lunch was where it got more interesting. Like yesterday, Derek had everyone go through everything they had learned the day before. Then he got in the ring with one of the other instructors while everyone else gathered around to watch.

"Listen up!" Derek shouted, silencing the crowd. "Some of you, especially the ladies, may be doubting your ability to win a fight against someone bigger or stronger than you, so this little demonstration should change that." The doors to the training room opened and everyone turned to watch a small girl not much older than themselves, strut her way into the room. "Just in time Tara," Derek smiled. "Everyone I'd like you to meet a good friend of mine-Tara Rivers."

Aubree felt an unfamiliar ache as she watched Tara climb her wait into the ring, Derek easily putting an arm around her shoulder, the two whispering quietly to each other for a minute. She tried to look away but she just couldn't look away. She felt infinitely better when he removed his arm from Tara's shoulder and stepped out of the ring.

"Don't take it easy on her Gavin," Derek called towards the ring with a smirk.

And easy, Gavin did not do. He threw all his strength into his punches but only managed to get a few hits in. Tara was fast though and she used that to her advantage. She kept moving even though the hits she received were enough to knock her down. She managed to get in a few kicks and hits herself but for the most part, the fight was pretty even.

It was Gavin who seemed to finally have enough. He charged Tara, surprising her, and lifted her high above his head only to slam her on the floor. Most of the room winced, including Derek, at the sight. Tara got right back up though and kept moving, fighting through the pain. She moved swiftly as Gavin charged at her again. She tripped him, kicked multiple times, and then was on him, relentlessly punching him. Gavin managed to dodge a few hits but he was still losing.
