From twelve to seventeen , Sombra , known then as Olivia Colomar , had several affiliations and dealings with the Los Muertos gang , joining them on her fourteenth birthday . She stopped working with them after being noticed by an "Eye" A.I that knew everything about her at the age of seventeen . During her time with Los Muertos , she was primarily responsible for surveillance , blackmail , and other operations that required her genius level IQ and hacking expertise .

From eighteen to twenty - two , Sombra was a gray hat hacker . It was during this time that she received her augmentations . With no allegiance , she posed a threat to politicians all over the world as she blackmailed , exposed , and threatened several people on a global scale behind her screen . During this time , she begins her work on exposing LumeriCo , but the information doesn't go public until years later.

Talon Agent
Sombra joins Talon at age twenty - three , and stays with them during the current events of the lore . While she isn ' t necessarily loyal to them and does use them for her own gain , she's one of Talon's best agents and arguably the smartest one as well.
