"In the end it's all about the faces, traces and places left of shadows""I'll kill you Anna."
Lee says as I splash the water bucket on his face. He immediately sits upright, his face and hair dripping.
I giggle and reply
"You'll have to get up for that. You sleepyhead." He grabs the nearest pillow and throws it on me. The pillow comes flat at my face. And I frown. Lewis rolls the covers and gets out of the bed before I could react. In no time I grab another pillow and start running after him.
"What are you two doing ?? It's time to get ready for school. Kids." Our Mother, Rosaline finds us running in the hallway. We both stop on seeing her.
"She started it." Lewis points at me. his dark brown eyes dried from running while his hair still stuck wet with his scalp.
"No mother, I was just trying to wake him up." I shrug my shoulders.
"Okay enough of that. Now go and change while I prepare breakfast, your uniforms are ready in your bedroom."
***********"Huh Monday again." I sigh looking at the concrete building standing in front of me, the gate open, allowing the students to come in. I lower my eyes already wsihing for the day to end. I am Wearing a white shirt with a blue jeans skirt, a yellow colloured dotted bag hanging at one of my shoulders. My young brother Lewis who has just turned ten is standing with me. The only difference is he likes his black jeans and a white shirt they called a uniform, wears his bag proudly over his shoulders like some label of dignity and absolutely loves mondays. What else does a five year old does when he goes to school?
On my comment his dark brown eyes widen at me in confusion for a while but my frowned face does'nt lessen his excitement for the day.
"Come on lets go." He takes my hand and being a good sister, I get pushed into the school.
Bunches of students have already filled the hallway. Everyone in Iroland, is punctual. Most of them like to be at their destination before time calls. All of them are talking, girls gossiping and giggling. Guys standing in their groups staring at every other girl who passed. Middle schoolers playing. I check my side, lewis is'nt here. Then my eyes point him in front of a locker, high fiving his friends. Walking awag, I smile at his sight. Atleast some one is enjoying his time here.
That is when I smash my face right into someone's back. I quickly move back. But it's too late the guy has noticed me. He's taller than me. He turns towards me, his hair curly and blue eyes glued at me with an eyebrow raised. He looked like a high schooler.
"I'm sorry. I did'nt mean to." Before I complete my sentence he replies
"No problem. Happens." And in no time he reclaims his former position with his back turned at me.
"That was close." My friend, Lara reaches me. She was wearning the same uniform, her red hair open and well ironed unlike me, who's straight black hair were curled in a pony tail.
"Yeah."
"But you got a reply." Her green eyes shined with excitement.
"Wait. Do you actually think that I intentionally collided with him?"
"Not necessarily." She says in a playful tone. On spotting Jason in the hallway I call out.
"Hey Jason??? Could you please get our friend Lara a life? She seems to be lacking one right now."
"Hey that's rude Anna." Lara exclaims while Jason throws his football at me that I catch well on time, rolling my eyes.
"Let me guess. Monday again?" He comments curving his lips at me. They all know how much I hate mondays.
"As rude as it sounds." I answer Lara and then continue. Now that Jason is here. Lets get this day over with."
I take a step towards the way to class
"Well well well. Our little girl is having a bad day."
I twirl to face him "Not today Bill." And smash the football on his face and the three of us run away.
********
The first class started with Sir. Shawn. Repeating the same old story about his ordinary life and how he has to clean all his house before coming to school. And how he had alot of homework to check.
"When do you think he'll start the chapter?" Lara who sat next to me wisperred in my ear.
"One minute from now."
Then after accurate one minute. Sir.Shawn picked his mathmatics guide book up and instructed.
"Everyone open your books and analyze the questions on page twenty three. And Anna please prepare the board for me."
"Yes sir." I secretly roll my eyes at him.
To me the attention one gets because of good grades sucks.
I take the board marker from him and am on my way to the board when someone knocks the door of our class and enters.
"Sir. Shawn. I'm sorry to interupt your class but the Mr.Henry is calling Anna Montegral at his office."
"Yes. Free atlast." I blurt out.
"Sorry what did you just say?"
"I'll be right there."
*******
"Miss. Montegral. You do understand that if this happened one more time you are expelled." From the other side of the principal's glassed top table Mr.Henry look at me in utter alarm.
"Yes sir."
"Then why did you hurt bill."
"I did'nt. It was the football." I shurg my shoulder
"Do not play games with me. Ask your father to visit me tomorrow."
"Sure sir."
*********
The moment the bell rang, all the students started rushing outside the school like free pigeons. Lewis and I were also walking out of the school now. In five minutes dad arrives. He's wearing a lab coat. He must be coming from his shift at the hospital. My Father. Gregory Montegral is a very successful doctor. I admire him for that.
"Hey. Come on kids. Lets go."
And we start walking with him, the car is parked on the back of alot of aligned cars.
"So How was your day lewis?" Father asked once we were all set and ready to leave.
"It was awesome. We played basketball today." And then he starts on telling me everything with alot of detail that is not actually necessary. I wonder how farher endures them.
"Cool. What about you Anna?"
"Just the same old routine nothing special." I reply in a careless tone my gaze fixed on the window.
"I'm sure it'll get better for you one day Anna. So who's up for ice cream?"
Ice cream the one and only thing that can melt me. And my father knows it really well.
"Meee" Lee and I reply collectively with our lips curved in excitement.
