The car wasn’t going to stop and neither was she. It honked frantically, warning everyone in ear-shot. The girl finally looked up from her phone in just enough time to watch the car hit her. That is, if my quick reflexes didn’t cause me to swoop down and scoop her up in my arms, landing us on the sidewalk. Her phone fell out of her hand, crushed by the tires.
“Whoops,” I announced. I looked back at the pretty blond, making sure she was okay. “I’d ask for your number,” I said, “but you don’t seem to have a phone anymore.” She was too shocked to answer as I backed up into traffic, timing myself perfectly so I could grab the back of a truck and swing myself into the bed.
I stood up straight, my arms outward, letting the wind flow throw my red and blue suit. Although a couple people cursed my name, the rest cheered it, “Spider-Man! Spider-Man! Spider-Man!” I laughed and whooped, jumping from the moving truck up to the minivan in front of it, flipping mid-air. I repeated this process until I made it to the armored car.
A frantic police officer was in the driver’s seat when I swung into the seat next to him through the open window. “It won’t stop!” he croaked. “Did you try the brakes?” I asked as I grabbed the wheel and turned it to avoid quite a few oncoming vehicles.
He slammed on the brake repeatedly to prove it wasn’t working. I turned to look at him quickly, “Well this seems like a problem, doesn’t it?” He nodded his head stiffly. “Loosen up, I got this,” I exclaimed, punching his arm. He stared at me wide eyed as I swung back out the window, crouching on the top of the vehicle. Sirens blared in the distance, a little too far to be of any use.
I slid down the windshield so I was sitting on the hood of the car. I then activated my web-shooters and shot them toward cars on either side of me. I held on tight to the webs as the cars pulled roughly on my shoulder sockets. This isn’t my brightest idea, I chastised myself. After what seemed like forever, the armored car slowed down but started to pull the other cars along with it, creating quite a large pileup in the middle of New York City. The car came to a complete stop and I let go of the webs, falling forward onto the pavement. I sat up slowly and rolled my shoulders, wincing.
I could hear the heavy breathing of the police officer as he got out of the vehicle. “Are you okay?” he asked, sounding genuinely worried. I hopped up on two feet and grabbed his outstretched hand with both of mine. “Just another day in the life of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man!” It was a good thing he couldn’t see my expression, because I grimaced through the whole sentence.
I then ran quickly toward the nearest building and jumped, landing on the glass in a crouch and sticking there. I stopped for just a moment to look back down at my job well done before shooting my web at the building across from me. I swung myself along the street and up toward the sky, looking for another life to save.
