remus sat with his best friends—lily, mary, frank, and alice—in frank's house. frank's arm was casually slung around alice's shoulder and music, specifically arctic monkeys, was quietly playing from lily's phone. on the table that they were sitting around was the board game candy land, where mary was very obviously in the lead.

"mary, just take your turn!" alice exclaimed as lily nodded in agreement.

mary shook her head. "this must be done carefully or all my hard work will be wasted."

"all you have to do it move your person forward five spaces! it doesn't need to be careful!" lily argued, although a smile was displayed on her lips.

frank chuckled. "take as long as you like, mary."

"don't encourage this!" remus, lily, and alice all snapped at the same time.

remus only joined because his turn was just after mary and he was close to overtaking lily, who was currently in second.

suddenly, a loud ringing filled the room and the group collectively groaned, each checking their phones to see if it was theirs. remus sighed when he saw that it was his and that it was an unknown number. he answered quickly, for he had recently applied for a job.

"james! you'll never believe what just—" an unfamiliar voice said loudly.

"uh, sorry...you've got the wrong number," remus told the stranger politely.

"oh. man, i really wish i didn't get a new phone now... the names sirius. you?"

remus raised an eyebrow, although the guy on the other line couldn't see. "remus."

"oh, that's a nice name. what are you doing on this fine night, remus?"

"nothing really. listen, i've got to go." remus quickly tried to think of an excuse, not wanting to continue this conversation.

"such a shame. it really would've been nice to try to get to know you." sirius responded, a hint of flirting in his tone.

"yeah, yeah, right back at you. bye!"

before anything else could be said, remus hung up and put his phone on silent. lily looked at him in amusement, wiggling her eyebrows when he looked her way.

"so," she said, "who was that?"

"some guy called sirius."

"does he sound cute?"

"he sounded way too comfortable in that situation," remus muttered.

mary laughed from her side of the table. "oh, remmy, not all of us are as awkward as you."

"shut up," remus pretended to whine before beginning to take his turn.

and so they continued their game, laughing the night away.
