"Change the channel."
"No."
"Change the channel."
"No."
"Change the channel."
"No."
"Come on," I groaned, letting my head fall back against the couch cushions. "You don't even like this team."
"Sure I do," my brother, Chase shrugged nonchalantly, lazily flicking his green eyes towards me. We looked almost nothing alike. Chase had mom's blonde hair, light skin, and dad's tall lean build. But I had my dad's brown hair, olive skin, and mom's short build. We both had our dad's green eyes. He was a year older than me, meaning he had already graduated. But for some reason, he actually decided to go to a nearby college and stayed in this town.
"Oh, you like the Panthers now?" I scoffed, rolling my eyes. "We live on the west coast, Chase, you've never watched them."
"What are you talking about, I watch the Panthers all the time," he said, tucking the TV remote beneath him as he fixed his eyes back on the football game.
"That's bullshit and you know it," I shook my head, scowling at him as I hit him with a pillow.
"Is it?" he raised an eyebrow.
"Just change the channel!"
"Nah."
"Chase, why don't you watch the game in your room?" I suggested, all the while trying to slide the remote out from under him.
"Because the screen here is bigger," he answered, shifting so that the remote was unreachable. "Why don't you go watch TV in your room?"
"Because I always have to," I groaned again, shoving him. "Why couldn't you be like every other kid in your grade and go to a college as far away as possible?"
"Why don't you just go over to Gordon's house and take over his TV?" Chase countered, shifting so that his legs were between us and he proceeded to try and kick me off of the couch.
"Because Gordon is probably playing video games, and you know when he does that there's no pulling him away from the TV screen," I explained, knowing that I had a point. "Gordon" was Michael's middle name and he hated it. Which was exactly why my brother always called him that.
"Oops, guess you're stuck watching football," Chase shrugged.
"Come on," I whined, smacking his shin.
"Don't smack my shin," he mumbled, nudging me away with his foot.
I smacked his shin.
"Mila."
"Chase."
"Go watch TV in your room."
"You go watch TV in your room - "
Suddenly, the front door slammed shut and I could hear the sound of heels ring out against the wooden floor. "Chase? Mila?"
"In here, Mom." Chase called over the TV announcer's voice and my mom came rushing into the living room.
"Turn the channel. Put it on the news station." She ordered, kicking off her heels and setting her workbag on the table.
"But mo-"
"Turn it now." she barked and Chase shut up and flicked the TV to the news channel. There was a commercial break, but a banner that read BREAKING NEWS UP NEXT ran across the bottom of the screen.
