A/N- I know this is probably complete shit but my friends have been telling me that I should write more so here's this piece of work and I'll try to come up with something less depressing later-
Dean and Cas have lived rough lives. Cas had the constant civil war with Heaven and Dean had the hunting jobs that often ended with him injured. Sam still hunted with Dean but he also did jobs with other hunters they became comfortable with. During this particular incident, Sam was away with another group so it was just Dean and Cas in the bunker. Dean had gone out to work a case that would only take a few hours max since they knew what the monster was and where it was living. Cas looked up at the clock and noticed it was a bit late for Dean to be out from the case. All the sudden the door flew open and Cas heard Dean's voice.
"HELP! SOMEBODY! PLEASE!" his voice rung in the angel's ears and sounded absolutely terrifying.
"Dean! What's wrong?" Cas asked, but as he rounded the corner he knew immediately. Dean's arm had been ripped up with severe cuts and he looked like he had blood coming from his stomach. He picked Dean up and hauled him into the war room and laid him on the table.
"Stay with me Dean," Cas pleaded. He raced to get the emergency kit. When he got back he could see Dean losing consciousness and he was very pale.
"Dean please!" sobbed Cas. He couldn't lose him. He was everything, but he didn't know that. He stitched him up as best as he could. All he could do was wait. He took Dean's hand and held it against his lips as he silently prayed for Dean to make it. Cas then decided to call Sam and fill him in.
"Okay, Cas just keep a close eye on him and take care of him. I'm about a day away at least, but I'll get there as soon as I can," Sam said over the receiver. After that Cas hung up and went back over to Dean to see if he had improved. He seemed just barely conscious so he decided to take a step for himself.
"I love you, Dean," Cas said, just barely over a whisper. Dean jerked his head sideways a bit and looked at Cas. His color was still deathly pale. Not caring anymore if Dean would remember if he recovered, Cas softly kissed Dean before he passed back out.
-A Day Later-
It had been roughly a day that Cas had spent by Dean's side making sure that he was taken care of. He thought that maybe he would be okay. But later that day after letting Dean sleep for a while, he went to check on him and noticed he was very hot. He called to ask Sam for advice and was told to shove him into a bathtub full of ice to forcefully dispell the fever. Cas followed Dean instructions and waited in concern while Dean fought with his body to get rid of the excessive heat. After a while, he heard Dean say his name softly.
"Cas," Dean said, barely above a whisper.
"What is it Dean?" Cas asked. He got close enough to Dean that he gave him a break from struggling to talk.
"I.... love.... You.... too...." Dean managed to choke out. Cas nodded his head that he understood Dean and pressed a very soft kiss to his mouth. All the while Dean was still struggling to fight the fever. He was still very pale and the heat wouldn't drop. "Tell.... Sammy.... too...." Dean whispered. He slowly lifted his hand to grab Cas's and squeezed weakly. Suddenly his head dropped, and his chest no longer lifted. The grip on Cas's hand went limp."Dean?" Cas said. With no acknowledgment or movement, Cas began to panic.
"DEAN" Cas screamed. He shook him. When nothing happened he hauled Dean out of the tub just as Sam rushed in the door.
"Cas, what's happening?" Sam questioned."I had him in the tub with ice to get rid of the fever and then he said that he loved me and to tell you that he loved you too and then it's like his entire body just quit. I tried to wake him up but it wouldn't work," replied Cas. He completely broke down while Sam tried to get his brother back.
"Cas... I think he's gone," Sam said in a grim voice. Cas started to sob even harder. Sam covered his brother up and then went to Cas.
"You did everything you could. He probably got an internal infection from the wounds he had. We'll give him a hunter's funeral later. I'm so sorry you had to be the one that saw him go down," Sam said softly. He hugged Cas as gently as he could so he wouldn't crush his form. He then left to start preparing things for his brother's funeral. Meanwhile, Cas had moved enough to where he could hold Dean's hand."I'll see you in Heaven, Dean. I love you. I'm so sorry I couldn't keep you alive," Cas whispered gently to Dean. He lightly kissed his hand and wished him farewell.
