Different Pairings

Mashima is going to drag the parings as long as he can :

Hiro Mashima confirmed in volume 36 extras that he has at least three (could be more, who knows) arcs left to write.  He states in volume 38 extras that people keep asking him if Fairy Tail will end, to which he says not to worry (along those lines) because it’s not ending anytime soon.

He has been pretty clear with which pairings he’s going for, despite everything.  But making any of them canon now would kind of ‘ruin’ the fun of them I guess you could say.  And he likes messing with the readers.

Take two of the most hinted pairings: Jerza and Gruvia.

Jerza

They love each other.  That much is confirmed.  They have a history together, and there’s no way this pair has a ‘just friends’ vibe.  Now here’s the part where Mashima wants to drag it all out.  Jellal and Erza almost kiss, until Jellal pushes Erza away and tells her he has a fiance.  Many Jerza fans are upset, angry, annoyed, saddened, etc etc.  On the bright side, and what keeps this pair going, is that Erza knows he lied and they continue to have great interactions afterwards.  The downside is that they believe “this is their answer” (to not be together for their own reasons).  This could change in the many arcs to come, as it’s clear they are still in love.  Mashima purposely toys with us, even though there are no rival pairings to Jerza at all. Jellal wants Erza to be happy no matter what.  Even when he was crazy, Erza (if I remember right) says that it was Jellal who saved her in the tower of heaven by changing places with her.

Another downside would be that Jellal isn’t in Fairy Tail, so interactions are less than some other pairings.  However it’s really about quality, not quantity.  That’s something Jerza exceeds in.

Gruvia

Juvia loves Gray.  She can be obsessive, and a fangirl.  But she loves him with all her heart, as shown in her fight against Meredy.  Gray and Juvia interact alot.  Many other characters in the series have commented on their relationship; calling them romantic or “lovey dovey”.  Mashima himself called their unison raid “Gray and Juvia’s synchronized attack of love” (how much more clear can you get?), which also consisted of Lyon and Chelia noticing the relationship and Gray/Juvia continuing to hold hands.  Gray died for Juvia.  You can argue he would do this for any of his friends, but Mashima used Juvia for a reason.  Authors don’t tend to use ‘any’ friend in that sort of situation. Gray also vowed to live with his comrades, but went back on it and died for a girl whose in love with him.  Downside? Gray’s cold words and rejection afterwards.  He doesn’t like her fangirling, but was oddly harsh with her.  It wasn’t like him at all, especially after all the development.

Bright side?  Juvia won’t give up and does not take it as a rejection at all. The scene was ridiculous, and we got no reasoning at all.  We also see them again two chapters later, where Juvia calls Gray out for being rude.  She makes him realize, and so he smiles due to her words and thanks her.  We see another positive moment for them, despite the rejection.  Just like Jerza, we have Mashima continuing to show case them.

NaLu is another case.  I think that will happen in the end mostly because they are main characters, sad to say.  A lot of interaction, good friends, etc.  So where is Mashima toying with them?  Oh.  Neither Natsu or Lucy’s feelings are confirmed at all.  There’s a good amount of evidence that Mashima will go for NaLu, but at the same time, he’s dragging it out.
