Allegedly it was used as a punishment during Ye Olden Days, but similarly to Tsuji-ura, I suspect that's just a fiction tacked onto the story to make it freakier.

Anyway, this particular game is an all-night event; after you summon the Midnight Man to your place of residence via the sort of blood magic it's not generally recommended that anyone do, ever, you spend the rest of the evening moving about your house and trying to avoid him. What happens if he catches you? Well, depending on who you ask, he'll either trap you inside a for a few hours, or he'll tear you apart or even posses you. Fun!

Instructions
1:Get a paper and write your full name
2: prick yourself a put the blood on the paper (needle is recommended)
3:light a candle and place the piece of paper outside a wooden door
4: at 12:00am directly knock three times on the door, open it and blow out the candle
5: when you blow out the candle and close the door QUICKLY delight the candle
6: this is where your game begins don't cheat and bring salt so you can protect yourself with a salt circle if you are scared
7: don't turn on any lights and you can end the game at three am

Oh, and even if you make it through the game unscathed, don't assume you're safe from the Midnight Man forever. He might still be there... waiting. I did play this game it was the weirdest but terrifying game I have ever played but if you want more details you can look it up or watch it on YouTube.
