Chapter 5: When life punches you in the face…

Present*

As soon as I walked through the door I was bombarded with a million questions from, you guessed it, Ash. The crazy blonde didn’t even give me time to put down Harper who was clutching onto me like I would drop her any second.

“What did he say? Was he a total dick about it or did he seem polite? Did you slap him?” My mind was racing and I thought my head would explode right here in Eddy’s doorway, but luckily she was shut up by Eddy himself.

“Shut up, Ash. Let the girl come in and sit down.”

I mouthed a quick thank you to him before walking into the living room and placing Harper on the floor. As soon as her tiny feet hit the ground she was off in search of Henley, Eddy’s two year beagle.  It wasn’t surprising when he came running into the room, meeting her half way to lick her hand in greeting. They were best friends.

I sighed and sat on the loveseat while Ash sat beside me and Eddy went to get his laptop.

“He said a lot of things. He’s still a dick. And no, he didn’t get slapped, but I sure got punched in the face. By life.” I groaned leaning back as Eddy returned with Skype open and waiting for Paige’s call.

At the moment Paige was in medical school so she only made it home for Holidays, like Christmas and Thanksgiving. She had gotten a full ride, same as me. The difference was she got to go.  I think I missed her most at times like this when I needed her comforting honesty. It wasn’t the same speaking through a computer screen.

There was a beeping signaling Paige calling us so Eddy answered and soon Paige’s face popped up on the screen. She looked the same as usual with her hair up in a bun and her eyes looking tired from the long hours of studying.

“So, what’s up?” She leaned forward preparing for our group therapy session with Harper squealing in the background.

“He’s back.” I said running my hands over my face, groaning in frustration. “And it wouldn’t have been so bad if he didn’t see Harper. I just wasn’t ready for that.”

As I rambled on about what had happened starting from the moment I laid eyes on him for the first time in three years. When I was finished Eddy had his angry pout face on because he knew he could never take Bryce and Ash was just disappointed that I didn’t hit him myself.  Paige on the other hand looked completely calm and unaffected by my story, which didn’t surprise me.
