"It's because I love you."
...S-Seriously?!
He couldn't even find it in himself to outrageously laugh, opting instead to look gobsmacked amidst the throngs of people. Never mind that he probably looked stupid in the moment; this was a total fucking joke.
It wasn't even hilarious, for crying out loud.
The girl, seemingly along his line of thinking, staggered back, a forced smile painting her face.
"Ha... hahaha! That's... that's a good one, Haru-kun! For a minute there, I thought you were serious! Hahaha! Haru-kun, you silly joker!" She nervously stuttered, her lips quivering and eyes dancing with uncertainty and shock.
Kuro scowled a bit at those words, absently clutching at his wounds. This bitch didn't even accept the fact that Haruki "loved" her-emphasis on the quotation marks-and Haruki was all-too-willing to leave him for this?! Holy hell, he could do so much better!
He didn't want to admit it, but truth be told, it still hurt. Even after all those assurances of "I'm fine" and "It was for the best", and all those scathing remarks and violent instances, it...
It just hurt. It just hurt so fucking much.
No, Kuro, he chastisted himself, it wouldn't do any good to be so bitter now, would it?
He exhaled slightly as a bunch of his fangirls came to his aid, helping him up and tendering to his various wounds along with whispered assurances. None of that registered in his mind, however, when he caught wind of Haruki's expression.
Sadness. Embarrassment. Hurt.
So much hurt.
Maybe even moreso than what he felt now.
And that simple fact-not so simple, really-just made him want to maim that ungrateful, insensitive, airheaded bitch who practically trampled all over Haruki's feelings in public. His less-than-stellar standing in the school's social hierarchy taken into account (as well as hers, but he never gave a shit about that anyway), he didn't have to be born a Seer to realise what would happen next.
He just didn't expect it to happen so soon.
In the time he spent trying to get up, Haruki seemed to have collected himself and mustered a smile while rubbing the back of his head. "O-Oh. Hahaha! Silly me, right? Yeah, sorry for joking like that, hahaha."
The girl (to be honest, he didn't bother with knowing her name; almost all their faces were same to him anyway) paused slightly at that and directing her focus to an empty space beside her before biting her lip slightly. "Haru-"
"N-No really, I'm fine, haha!" He assured, extending out his hand while flashing her a grin. "Just calm yourself, will ya'? Anyways, we shouldn't dwell on such things, alright? It wouldn't do good for the both of us!"
You're not fine, Kuro wanted to say, I know for a fact that you're not fucking fine. Stop lying to yourself, dammit!
But admittedly, he was too afraid to say anything.
...Damn him. Damn it. Damn it all.
He hated himself so much.
She owlish blinked for a moment before a cheery smile crept onto her face, and she eagerly took his hand and shook it.
"Yes, Haru-kun!" She chirped, before letting it go.
...Fuck her so much.
The rest of the student body began to gradually disperse, seeing as the scene moulded into some cheesy telenovela straight out of afternoon prime time. He could even almost feel the exasperation oozing out of the students as two of the most disliked people in school were trapped in their own world.
"What a fucking bother," he heard some girl mutter to her friend as they walked away. "Seeing two guys fight was even better than this."
"I know," the latter agreed.
The commentators did nothing to deter him though, as he stayed rooted to the spot. Several girls offered to take him to the clinic, yet he politely declined, noticing the other boy all alone.
The last thing I need now is another person intruding on us, he thought snidely before taking the chance to slowly inch towards him.
He barely heard a farewell sent his way as he had finally reached the other. Fingertips merely hovered over his shoulder before Haruki quickly tensed and bit out, "What the hell do you want."
What struck him particularly wasn't his tone, nor his choice of words, nor his stance.
It was how he was able to quickly notice his presence.
In surprise, Kuro immediately drew back his hand and furrowed his brow. "I just-"
"Came to poke fun at me? Mock me? I don't care for any of that shit, asshole, go do whatever the hell you want," he interrupted bitterly with a mocking scoff.
Kuro froze. He just...He just never thought he'd see Haruki close up again.
But not like this. Why like this?
"I just thought you need some...comforting," he uttered lowly, bowing his head. "I mean, after all-"
"I don't need pity from the likes of you," Haruki spat, turning around to face him head-on.
The sight of the boy he loved was breaking his heart and it really hurt so much.
Teary-eyed, gritted teeth, reddened cheeks and all that.
"You used to be so strong, Haru," he thought aloud.
He immediately tensed when he felt something in Haruki snap.
"AND WHAT OF IT?!" He yelled. "HOW CAN I BE STRONG WHEN NOBODY LIKES ME, THE GIRL I LOVE DOESN'T TAKE ME SERIOUSLY, AND YOU OF ALL PEOPLE BARGE INTO MY LIFE AGAIN-"
"I STILL FUCKING LOVE YOU, OKAY?!"
Haruki immediately froze.
Before he knew it, Kuro was already going on a tirade. "I still fucking love you, I don't know why, and I hate seeing you destroy yourself over a person you claim you love who in truth doesn't even give a single shit about you-"
"Look who's talking," Haruki snorted. "You, who has been flirting with me even after months we've separated, have the gall to call me obsessed-"
"That wasn't what I said!" Kuro sharply rebutted. "I just...I just don't want to see you so broken," he finished weakly.
All was silent, the soundless echo ringing in their ears, until one broke it.
"I'm sorry."
He blinked and exhaled wistfully.
"I know."
Haruki walked towards him, and leant his head on Kuro's shoulder, crying quietly.
"I'm so sorry...Please..."
Kuro embraced him slowly, almost as if he was cautious that Haruki would immediately disappear, and smiled sadly.
"You shouldn't be."
