For once the house was quiet.
Utterly and unbearably silent that it consumed the entire house until it almost seemed like ghosts were living in it.
The only sound heard came from the untouched room that remained closed for the past two years up until now.
Inside, Ava lay curled up on top of a bed. Not just any bed, his bed.
Soft whimpers escaped her mouth even though she tried to muffle them in the sheets that still smelled like aftershave and cinnamon. It smelled just like him.
Her eyes were red and puffy from crying constantly and her nose was all red and stuffy from blowing it so much. Tissues were scattered across the bed and overflowing from the trash can across the room. A picture frame lay broken and smashed to itty bitty pieces on the carpeted floor, and the photo that use to be placed in it was next to the bed with pieces of glass on it and a tear across the middle of it.
It ran through the face of a boy, her brother.
Her brother who was declared a missing person two years ago on a Sunday night, where houses were beginning to flood from the ongoing rain that poured from the dark and gloomy sky. She could still vividly remember the night.
Her brother was suppose to come home from school that Friday night, but he never showed. They weren't worried as he's done this before. It wasn't unusual for him to not be seen for hours and then suddenly come home extremely late, the smell of beer prominent on his breathe as he stumbled his way up the staircase with a smile stretched across his face. But he always came home.
Hours passed and no one heard from him. Her parents although seemingly worried, constantly reassured her that everything was alright and he would be home soon. But the growing pit in her stomach and the knot in her throat told her something was very wrong. That her brother wasn't coming home. Not today and definitely not tomorrow.
Those hours turned into a day. It was all really a blur. Police questioned them, asking personal questions like:
Did he have a girlfriend?
They told them that as far as they knew, he wasn't seeing anyone. That he was focusing on getting into college.
Did he show any signs that he was scared or paranoid?
He was always smiling and joking around with his sister and never seemed scared or paranoid around anyone. Other than the fact that he screamed like a little girl and cowered when so much a jump scare came when they watched a horror film, he seemed happy and content.
Did he do drugs?
He never showed any signs of going drugs.
Did he hang out with the wrong crowd?
He had a good amount of friends that were always polite and nice. He had a best friend that he was always with and who constantly came to their house. His name was Noah Johnson. They said he was a lovely boy, maybe a little cocky, but harmless.
They continued to ask more intrusive questions, but Ava was dazed through the entire questioning, refusing to believe that her brother was gone. She was in denial, afraid if she believed it, nothing would be the same. That she wouldn't be the same.
It dragged on until finally, after twenty four hours, he was declared missing and anyone who saw someone of similar stature was to report it to the authorities immediately.
However, no one came forward and for the first two years the police searched for him taking any lead they could get. But eventually the search parties lessened until they stopped looking for him completely. Everyone stopped talking about it, and the whispers and rumors surrounding it disappear, like it was a distant memory no one cared about.
It seemed that Ava was the only one who cared, who truly wanted answers.
She was angry at the whole fucking world for forgetting her brother.
Her cries stopped suddenly, replaced by anger and confusion as she struggled to understand what really happened.
Where had her brother gone and why?
She clenched her jaw, refusing to cry, and picked up the fallen picture of her and her brother.
If no one was going to look for him, then she will.
And she was going to get those answers no matter what it took~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
