I had gotten that curse to relive one. Only to find things weren't as I wanted. I had my gift but lost a gift greater; freedom. The price I paid wasn't just my Bar Mitzvah money.
I groaned, rubbing my eyes as I turned off my alarm. I was tired of this whole 'waking up' thing. I tugged on a shirt I had already set aside, sighing. I just wanted to sleep, maybe a few more hours. I threw on my pants and rushed downstairs to the bathroom to go brush my teeth.
I imagine I looked incredibly tired, my eyes most likely half lidded and my hair a wild mess. I had no idea what I could compare it to, I didn't see enough when I could see. I just remember my pale unchanging eyes. When I could see my vision wasn't too clear but It's better than the nothing I have now.
I had already forgotten so many things, even after a month. Christine and I were together for maybe two weeks after the SQUIPS. We found we were better as friends. I imagine she said that because she didn't want the blind kid as her boyfriend.
I had intended to catch the bus, only to hear it drive by the house.
I heard my dad behind me, then his hand on my shoulder, "Hang in there champ, I can drive you."
I sighed, "No, no, I'll go on my own. I can walk, dad, I've got two legs and my walking stick. I know the way to school, it was the first day of kindergarten that you made me memorize the way there." I smiled slightly. Smiles were weird, "Don't worry, I'll get there on my own. I could call Michael if you're really worried."
He sighed, patting my back, "Got it, good talk." I could hear that sad smile. I knew he just wanted to be a dad again, but now I'm in high school, now I have to prove I'm independent. Easier said than done. This is a world for those with eyes.
"Don't worry, I'll text you on Michael's phone when I get there." I had broken my last phone and insisted I buy my own. It's a struggle without a job. I was slowly getting there though, slowly but surely.
"Be safe." He said softly as I grabbed my walking stick, I nodded in response and opened the door. I still remember what the sun looked like, a bright orb in the sky. I also learned not to look at it real quickly. I sighed, that hurt, I should've listened to my SQUIP when he yelled that.
I walked to school, humming to myself. I never knew if someone was around me, it was kind of scary at times but I did get used to it.
I knew I was nearing the school when I heard someone yell, "Hey, Jeremy!" Michael. My best friend. He was the best friend anyone could have and he dragged me through crowds. "How are you? Did you miss the bus again?"
I could practically see his eyes, that deep warm brown, the crinkles showing that he was grinning. "I'm good, and yes I did miss the bus. How are you?" I smiled softly, reaching out for his elbow. I found it quickly, holding on.
"You need to wake up earlier." He laughed, starting to walk, "I swear, you're going to miss school. I'll have to drive you and we all know how much my driving sucks." He laughed again, "I'm good too."
I grinned, "I mean, you get high in your basement with me so I guess thats worse." I laughed softly.
Michael probably rolled his eyes, which he then verbalized with, "Eye roll," Yes he did that so I knew what he was doing, "Can you come over tonight?"
I hummed, "I think so, you should text my dad and inform him you're kidnapping me."
"Mhm- stairs!" He yelled quickly. Not quick enough, I tripped a little, but laughed it off. Michael usually forgot I couldn't see the stairs. I took out my walking stick, laughing still. "Are you okay? Jere?"
I laughed a little, "Yeah, yeah, I'm fine." I stood up, laughing a little bit more, deciding I'd get up myself, grinning, "I need to learn where the stairs are."
Michael huffed, "Eye roll, I need to remember you trip over stairs. Your eyes need to work better." He teased.
I groaned playfully, "Dork." I laughed, "I'm sure you just need a new brain." I smiled, waiting at the top of the stairs for him.
He snorted softly, "Jeremy, you're so mean to me." Michael took my hand, guiding it to his elbow. "I help you so much and this is how you pay me back?"
I laughed, "Yep, of course, I know you're not all puppies and rainbows." I grinned, I had seen that at the Halloween party. I seen a lot at that party, more than I wish I had.
Michael noticed the change in my expression, "Come on buddy," I could hear that smile, cheesy and painful. "Let's go to our locker."
We did just share a locker since I didn't want to bother with my and we had become so accustomed to being together that why should we change that. We were just good friends.
He sighed as he reached it, there was something he wasn't telling me. I handed him my jacket, "What's up?"
"Nothing Jere." There was that smile, a pained smile, I could see it in my head. It wasn't a real smile.
"Did someone write on our locker?" I asked, "Micha, I'm not a baby, I should be able to know this stuff."
"Jere, it's nothing." He sounded defensive, someone did write on our locker.
"What does it say? Is it for me or for you?" I asked, "How bad is it?"
