It was nearing 10:00 in the evening, and the Winchester boys were still waiting from a call from their Dad. He had been away in Minnesota for a whole week, and he was meant to call them about an update on what's happening.
"Dean! Where's the tin opener?" Sam shouted from the makeshift kitchen from the house they were currently squatting in.
Dean let go of the telephone wire, and followed his baby brothers voice.
"It's, er, on the ammo box." Dean sighed and took his hand through his hair, wishing their problems could go away like the dust falling out of his ash hair.
"Well it's meant to go in the satchel pocket, Dean! How are we ever going to find anything if you're not putting them back again?!" Sam raised his voice, causing Dean to arch his eyebrows in suprise.
"Jeez, Sammy. Calm down- it's a tin opener, not a pistol, okay?"
Dean fixed his daring emerald eyes on his brother, and let an outward sigh leave his body.
Ruffling Sam's hair, he spoke: " Leave that to me Kiddo, you go read a book, or hack a bank... Whatever you do."
"Cool, thanks. Wait, hack a bank? That's illegal!"
Dean turned to the window and looked out, with a pensive look.
"So is leaving your kids with no money for a week. Now, scram! I'm going to figure out how to use the gas."
!!!
Half an hour later, and Dean and Sam were eating a late tea. (With almost three quarters of the tin on Sam's plate, but Dean wanted to make sure he wasn't hungry)
The phone finally rang, when Dean was mopping up tomato juice with the crust of the bread he had stolen from the shop around the corner,
"Dad!" Sam dropped out of his seat and ran to the device.
Sadly, Sam gave the phone to Dean ten seconds later.
"He wants to talk details with you."
Dean squeezed Sammy on the shoulder and picked the phone up tightly, as if it was his life support.
"Dad!"
John didn't even acknowledge the greeting.
"We've, ran into some... complications."
"What do you mean?"
"The wendigo has gotten worse, and it's corrupted the town. It took Vince. Loo, you're gonna have to stay in Lawrence, for a while, just 'til it gets all sorted."
Dean leant against the doorframe for support.
"Dad, we've got no money."
"I hid a credit card for a MR E KRIPKE in the hidden compartment of the supplies satchel."
"You could of told us this before I had to start nicking tins and things just to eat!" Dean raised his voice.
"DONT you shout at me, Dean. I get it, and I'm sorry, okay but it's the only thing we can do. Before Bobby went incognito, I managed to persuade him to enrol you at the highschool in Laurence."
"We don't even have anywhere to live!"
"Don't be ridiculous Dean, that house has been derelict even before your mother was born and you know that. I've got to go know, this call was risky enough."
Dean managed to fit in another "be safe" before the line disconnected.
Dean looked at his little brother, who had tears running down his youthful face.
"Sam, wait."
But it was of no use- Sam has slunk upstairs to the place he had claimed as his room, leaving Dean alone in the damp, broken kitchen.
