Nikki sat in the lobby chairs, swinging her legs back and forth. She had to remind herself to breathe and keep calm. And no crying. Her face heated when she remembered crying in front of that police guy. She had NEVER done that before, and that was the last time. Yes sir.

Oficer Jackson walked back into the lobby.

"I have some good news!" he smiled. "They said that you will be able to stay at the Clark Group Home across the street. Until, of course, we find your Momma." Her heart sank. So they couldn't find her still. Where could she be? Was she thinking about her?

"Didn't my description of her help? I can tell you more ab-" he shook his head.

"But don't give up hope. This is just the first day. And I know she's looking for you." Nikki looked down, away from him. He was lying, wasn't he. She turned away and curled her fist up into a ball. Why did these things have to be so darn hard? Why couldn't she just have someone who cared, someone who loved her? Turning on her heel, she stalked past the police officer and out the police station.

Outside was a lot cooler now. The sun hung low in the air and there was a gentle breeze. A few people walked in and out of the stores on the street. Laughing, joking, without a care in the world. She breathed in deeply. She closed her eyes really hard and tried to pray this all away. Her loneliness, pain, hunger. To pray that maybe her mother would come back to her. That when she opened her eyes, all would be well. Maybe a God somewehere would hear her. She opened her eyes. The world didn't change.  There was no God. If there was, he would have listened.

Officer Jackson walked up beside her.

"You forgot your suitcase."

"Thanks." she mumbled and snatched it from him.

"Let's go," she said and walked to the car. Clark's Group Home, here I come.
