The breeze blew by me and I had forgotten what it felt like. The way it seemed to grab my hair and try to take it away, the way I slightly shivered as it touched my bare skin, almost how it seemed to call my name as if it was trying to tell me something. It made me feel invincible, like in the movies or books with the metahumans and how nothing could stop them. In that very moment I felt as if I was a metahuman too. But when the wind blew away and I opened my eyes again I remembered I wasn't a metahuman I was an Octi, no I was the Octi. The only living Octi left or so that's what I believe. If they...well...if they ever existed before.
I'm like the metahumans but a lot different. I was never born human or human as you see it. I look human, I act human, I even smell human. But trust me I'm not human. I'm eight times less human than you. No, it doesn't make any sense but trust me at the end it will. This isn't a story well...not one you would sit down and write at a desk. Not one you would tell your kids. Not even one that should ever be shown to human eyes because I am the only living Octi and my life depends on eight.
No, not seven ate nine but the number eight, as in eight lives. They say cats have nine lives yes well I have eight. Not the kind of lives humans have, sacrificial lives. The kind that have to be given up for someone in need...someone dying. A part of me has to die so that someone else can survive. Well enough blabbing here's my story and it all starts with a little love.
She had golden brown hair, sparkling brown eyes, and lukewarm hands. I gazed upon her from across the room because I was to afraid to go talk to her. Usually I was good with words and I always knew what to say but with her it seemed as if my mouth never knew how to move. So I stayed standing at the bar and gazing at her until I felt a light tap on my shoulder. I turned to see who it was and realized it was her. I gave her a confused look before realizing I was daydreaming so much that I didn't realize she had moved.
"You looked a little lonely so I figured I'd come join you." She shouted to me over the music with a playful smile on her face. I couldn't help but laugh a little at her.
"I was just scoping out the area." I said to her with a grin. Her eyebrows raise in surprise.
"Oh, so you only came here so you could bring back intel to the F.B.I?" She said playfully.
"Actually yes I did." I said with a smirk.
"What have you found out so far?"
"Nothing unordinary. Mostly people getting too drunk and screwing each other on the dance floor."
"Is that it?" She said now laughing. My face started to get red and my palms sweaty.
"Oh wait I forgot something. There's this one woman who's acting really suspicious." I said with a playful grin.
"Oh yeah and who's that?" She asked seriously. Now my hands were shaking so I stuck them into my pockets. I was doing well tonight.
"Well she's wearing a dress unlike all the other women. She's mostly covered with a tiny bit of her top showing. Oh and the dress is a vibrant blue with a hint of white sparkles. I'd say she's about 5'1" and slim but a good kind of slim. Not sickly slim but healthy slim. She has wavy golden brown hair, sparkling brown eyes, and well from her touch she has lukewarm hands that are unusually soft. She has the kind of smile that lights up the room, the kind that makes babies laugh. To sum it up she's stunning but I can't quite figure out her motive." I said pretending to be looking around describing someone in the crowd. For a long while she was deathly quiet.
" You seem like you personally know this woman." She said suspiciously.
"You could say that." I said with a shaky voice,
"Well whoever this woman is she sounds amazing and her motive might be harmless. She might just want to have a drink with you and is waiting for you to ask or maybe she wants to take you on a date but hasn't had the opportunity to ask." She said while smiling at me.
" Well I guess I better go talk to her." I said seriously while pretending to set my drink down. For a moment she seemed confused and then she started laughing.
"You're a pain, you know that?" She said with a bright smile on her face while shaking her head. I couldn't help but smile back.
"Ohhhhh, you thought I was talking about you?" I said smirking.
"Sweetheart I know you were talking about me." She said laughing.
"Dang I've been caught red handed." I said blushing.
"Yes, yes you have." She said laughing as her face got slightly redder.
"Would you like to have a drink with me?" I asked her seriously.
"As long as your not going to give the F.B.I information on me." She said laughing.
"Oh and I'm the one who's a pain." I said with a grin.
"I was being serious. That's not something to joke about." She said with a smirk.
"Okay, okay, okay I promise." I said seriously.
"What do you promise?" She said laughing.
"I thought this wasn't a joking matter." I said seriously.
"Oh it isn't." She said smiling.
"You're the real pain here." I said laughing.
"That's no way to talk to a lady after you ask her for a drink. I feel offended." She said smirking.
"You shouldn't feel offended because..." I heard a strange noise and I turned around just in time to see a gunman walk into the club.
(Gunman)- "If one person moves everyone in this club dies and I mean it!" He screamed to the crowd. I knew I had to do something but what could I do. I couldn't let her get hurt.
"Go behind the bar and no matter what you hear do not move." I whispered to her.
"No, what are you going to do?" She said with fear.
"You have to trust me. I'm the only one who can face this guy and not get hurt."
"What do you mean?"
"Please trust me." I pleaded. She nodded to me and went and hid behind the bar.
"I'm going to stand up slowly and I just want to talk. Is that okay?" I asked the gunman.
"You can stand up but if you take one step I'm going to blow this man's head off." He yelled at me.
"Okay, I'm standing up slowly." I said with my hands raised.
"You said you wanted to talk let's talk." He said.
"Okay first I want to tell the people what I want them to do. Is that okay?"
"Yeah sure but I want four hostages." He said sternly.
"Okay, everyone listen up this is not a drill or a joke. I want you to listen to me very carefully. I want the people closest to the bar too slowly stand up and..."
"WAIT! I want to pick my hostages first."
"Okay, go ahead." I said calmly. He grabbed three women and the man that was already in front of him.
"Continue!" He yelled towards me.
"The people closest to the bar stand up very slowly and go behind the bar. Do this very slowly. Nobody needs to die tonight." I said calmly trying to get them to trust me. They did as I asked.
"Okay next I want the people closest to me on the dance floor to slowly stand up and walk towards me. When you get near me I want you one by one to very slowly grab a stool, move it forward, and sit behind it. If a single one of you picks up a stool he's going to think you're going to try to do something. I need you to trust me. No one needs to die." I pleaded with them. One by one they slowly did as I asked.
"The remaining people in the room I want you to go to the lounge area and hide behind the furniture. Do not pick up anything. Just sit down and be quiet." They did as I asked and now an hour had passed.
"Okay, everyone listen up I don't want any of you to move a single muscle unless he tells you to. I don't want you to try to be a hero and no I'm not doing this for you to trip a silent alarm. Don't do anything at all. Which means don't talk and don't move unless he tells you to." I said calmly. The gunman started clapping.
"Well that certainly was impressive. Where did you learn to do that?" He asked me.
"I didn't learn to do it anywhere. It's just instinct. I put myself in danger so others can live." I said calmly.
"You know It's interesting how a man with a gun can gain so much control and fear in a person. And then there's always the hero. In this case you're trying to be the hero." He laughed while pacing the room.
"Do you have a name? Someone I can refer to you as? It doesn't have to be your real name."
"A name...hmmm...of course I have a name. It's Mark Cloin." He said smirking at me. I felt the color drain from my face and my heart skip a few beats.
"Mark Cloin as in sixth grade Mark Cloin?" I asked him in shock.
"Who else would I be?" He laughed.
"Are you here for me?" I asked shocked.
"No no no you're not that special. You see after the unfortunate event that happened way back then I became angry. I promised him I'd take a life for his. That's why I'm here." He laughed at me.
"He wouldn't want you to do that and you know it." I told him sadly.
"How would you know!?" He screamed at me as tears gathered in the corners of his eyes.
"I knew him to Mark and I know how you felt towards him. I know what you were planning to do. I know Mark I know. He was kind, funny, smart, a little nerdy, but he was one of the most special people I have ever met. No matter who you were he would try to help you. That boy didn't have a single penny and his belly was always empty but he still helped others. Mark his death hurt me and for years I was angry too. I know you must hurt more than I do but we both know he wouldn't want you to do this. He would have done everything he could to stop you. He would've tried to understand you as I am now." I reminded him. He was silent for a long time as he considered my words.
"It doesn't matter because he's gone now! Nothing matters anymore! I see it over and over and over every single time I close my eyes. The way even his eyes seemed to scream. One moment he was glowing and then next he lay there lifeless. I can't do it anymore. It hurts to much." He cried.
"Mark, do you remember what he said? He said something before he went. Do you remember it?" I asked him.
"No." He sobbed.
"He said accidents happen and then he looked to you and he whispered something in your ear Mark." I told him.
"Y...y...yes he said I'm still here Mark." He sobbed through words.
"He's still watching you Mark. He doesn't want you to do this. Maybe that's why you came here."
"What do you mean?" He said confused.
"I think maybe he was watching you so he had you come here to where I was to remind you. Mark, I came back here because I had a feeling something bad was going to happen and I had to help. I wasn't going to come back and in fact I was going to leave next week but he wanted me here Mark." I said trying to comfort him.
"NO! You're lying to me!" He screamed at me.
"Mark, if I was lying to you then why would you have remembered the same thing I told you?" I asked him seriously.
"You're trying to trick me!" He yelled.
"MARK! I'm on your side." I yelled at him. He was silent for a moment until he put the gun down and slid it towards me.
"You're right he wouldn't want me to do this. Tell them to leave." He said without a tone. I should have known he was going to do something with that tone of voice.
"Okay, everyone one by one slowly go out the back door and once you're out the door get away as fast as you can." I said calmly. Everyone left or I thought everyone had left.
"Since you were the hero you get to be my victim." He said without a tone. I was confused until he pulled a gun out from behind his back and fired. My eyes went wide as I felt the bullet puncture my heart. I fell to the floor and could see him running out the front door. I heard heels clicking. It sounded like someone was running. My vision started going black as I felt a hand touch my chest and sobbs starting echoing around me.
I knew I wasn't going to die because I was an Octi. The only way I could die is if I used my eight lives. I felt pain in my chest, lots of pain as I opened my eyes. My vision was still blurry so I closed my eyes again. I tried to get up but the pain kept me down. I heard sobbing coming from my right. When I opened my eyes back up I could just make out a blue dress.
I had to get out of here. I opened my eyes back up and I could see clearly now. It was her kneeling beside me sobbing. I slowly moved my arm and grabbed her hand that was laying on top of my chest. She looked startled at first and then confused.
"Don't ask me. There's no time to explain I have to go." I said weakly. I started to sit up but I started seeing black dots. I wanted to yell but instead I tried harder. I sat up and the black dots were surrounding me. I took a break and tried to stand but instead I fell over. She tried to catch me but it happened to quick. My body smashed into the ground and the black dots came back.
Come on I yelled to myself. I slowly got up and the world started spinning but this time she caught me. I heard the clicking of her heels and my body was bouncing. That's how I knew she was running. I didn't know where we were going but I couldn't ask because things were starting to go black and very fast.
