(A/N: Sorry for the delay in updating, everyone. I needed a little break from this book, but a very close friend of mine, Uzzi Favour, reminded me that "work now, play later" and that happiness comes with effort. This part is dedicated to you, Uzzi, and to all my wonderful supporters. I love you all. 😘 If we are in this together to the end, let's make sure to share this book and help it reach more readers. Xoxo GT
Gift's POV
"Gift!" Jay called out, his voice hesitant yet filled with a strange urgency.
I turned to him, offering a small, somewhat distracted smile. "Yeah, what happened?"
He stood there, shifting his gaze to the floor as if trying to find the right words. The unease in his posture was palpable.
"Um... well, I... uh... you know..." he muttered, his words trailing off, eyes avoiding mine.
"Ah... um, excuse me," I said, kneeling down so I could meet his eyes directly. "You're speaking in riddles, Jay. Say something I can actually understand."
He cleared his throat and straightened, his usual calm demeanor wavering. "I'm going to a clan meeting. I won't be back for at least two days." He paused, then reached out to gently lift me from the ground. "You'll get cold if you stay in here," he added, his voice unexpectedly soft.
Before I could respond, he turned and began to walk to his room. "I promise I'll be back early. If I'm not, and if you're ever in trouble... remember, you can use telepathy." With that, he was gone.
Gosh, I never got to tell him... that I like him. I sighed, walking out of the walk-in closet in frustration. "Telepathy, my ass," I muttered under my breath.
"Wait, you actually keep a calendar and a diary to record your days?" Emily asked, raising an eyebrow as she watched me.
I nodded, not in the mood to explain further. "Yep. Going to buy a new one. A fresh start."
I left the house and walked to the store, picking up a diary-something simple yet personal-and a mini calendar just for myself. Something only I could use to track my own thoughts and days. I needed it. I had to write it all down.
When I got home, I sat in the quiet of my room, opening the diary. "Dear Diary," I began, the words flowing easily onto the pages. "I'm going to call you Jay."
The pen hovered above the paper as my mind spiraled in a storm of confusion and longing. So Jay, am I going crazy? How am I supposed to sleep tonight? How am I supposed to get through this night without nightmares?
I paused, my thoughts wandering to Emily, who had been subtly commenting on my behavior recently. Or maybe she wasn't. Either way, the storm in my head was becoming too much.
Day 1 - Night
I wrote, barely able to keep my eyes open, "I'm so sleepy, Jay. I hope you come back early tomorrow. Good night, Jay."
But the night didn't stay quiet for long. My dreams were tormenting. A nightmare that clawed at my heart.
"No! No, no, please let him go, Tony, please! If you love me, don't hurt him, and I promise, I will go with you. Please, please, PLEASE!"
My breath hitched in my throat as I watched-helplessly-as Tony killed Jay before my very eyes. "No, Jay, please! Wake up! Don't leave me!" My heart shattered, and my body shook with grief, tears pouring out of my eyes.
And then, just as suddenly, I woke up, gasping for air, drenched in sweat. The pain in my chest was raw. I didn't want to have that dream again, so I decided that staying awake was my only choice. I couldn't bear to sleep, not with that image burned into my mind.
