it reminded him of something. the two of them were on the roof, peering up at a sky of clouds. it almost seemed like whipped cream, and if he tried he could reach the sky and taste a bit of sweetness.

it was a funny thought. he'd tasted bitterness his entire life, and a nameless, abandoned boy like him could never reach the sky.

i wonder, she said, her voice jolting himself out of his thoughts. what does the sky want?

the sky doesn't want anything, he said. why should it?

she sat back, thinking. finally, she said, humanity could learn from the sky.

they were silent after that, the air filled with thoughts of their unsaid desires. the sky passed its judgment, but it said nothing.
