"Hello Utopian citizens." Said a voice behind the permanent porcelain smile. "It's a great day!" No "how are you"s or "how is your day." They say "it's a great day" because why would they be doing bad? Why would their day not be great? Of course it's a great day, because they live in Utopia.
"Utopia is wonderful." He said with false cheer. "You all love living here. Now," the Friend started to slowly pace the front of the classroom, "we will be talking about how to be the best citizen you can be." Now came the only question the Friend asks about their personal opinion. Grace had heard these speeches all her life. Though it wasn't a question of opinion. It was a test with one right answer."And isn't that what you all want? To be the best citizens you can be?"
"Yes!" Exclaimed everyone, wth wide smiles. Grace hadn't answered. The Friend was silent. The empty holes stared down at Grace and he cocked his head.He walked over to her desk and put a hand on her book. "I said..." His voice was quiet, slow, and deceptively soft. The tone prickled with a wary air as every eye in the class was on Grace. "Isn't. That. What. You. Want?" Carefully, Grace looked up and smiled widely. "Yes!" The Friend clasped his hands together. "Excellent! Of course it is." The black holes lingered on her for a beat longer until and her briskly turned around and strode to the front of the room.
"Class can you tell me what the greatest fear of Utopia is?" A question heard many times in class and easily answered. In a perfect unison the class replied "Bad thoughts and inequality!" The Friend was pleased and nodded. "Mhm, and how are those stopped?"
"The Friends stop them! They are our good thoughts and equality!" Everyone near shouted, and Grace near whispered. He nodded. "That's right."
