Butterflykit pounced onto Silvertail's tail.  Rainkit ran into her, and the two kits wrestled playfully.

Lynxear and Silvertail purred watching their kits. Lynxear padded to Rainkit and Silvertail to Butterflykit. It was their apprenticeship ceremony today.

"It's time you prepare, Quickstar will be calling a clan meeting soon." Silvertail meowed.

Butterflykit's ears pricked and her eyes shone with excitement. "I'll be the best apprentice!"
Silvertail smoothed Butterflykit's ruffled fur, purring.

"All cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather beneath the Fallen Tree for a clan meeting!" Butterflykit heard Quickstar yowl.

Cats streamed out of their dens and gathered, discussing their excitement. They all knew Butterflykit and Rainkit were now six moons old.

"Today, I will be apprenticing two kits." Quickstar announced. He turned his gaze to Rainkit. "Rainkit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Rainpaw. Your mentor will be Nightgaze. I hope that Nightgaze will pass down all she knows on to you."

"Rainpaw! Rainpaw!" The clan yowled. Rainpaw licked his chest fur, embarrassed.

Then he looked and Butterflykit. Her paws felt glued to the ground as the whole clans stared at her. Butterflykit you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed as well. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Butterflypaw. Your mentor will be Russetnose." Butterflypaw barely heard Quickstar finish, her paws were trembling with excitement now.
"Butterflypaw! Butterflypaw!"

Butterflypaw touched noses with her new mentor. "I'll be a great apprentice!" She promised.

"I'm sure that you will be." Russetnose mewed. There was a sadness in her eyes, and Butterflypaw felt as if something was bothering the silver warrior.

She turned to look at Rainpaw, he was bouncing up and down, begging Nightgaze to explore the territory with Butterflypaw. She couldn't help but purr.

Nightgaze let out a sigh and padded to Russetnose, inviting her and Butterflypaw. Russetnose agreed and the four cats left the ruined stone twoleg den. They walked to a huge puddle.

Butterflypaw gasped. "Rainpaw look how big it is! It's bigger than the entire camp."

"This is QuickClan's side of the ocean," she flicked her tail to the water, and then flicked it to an island in the middle. "And that's where leaders get their nine lives and where Cedarleap goes to share tongues with StarClan." I always wondered how they did that. But now I wonder how they even get to that tiny island!

Nightgaze seemed to have read her thoughts. With a paw, she pointed to a small raft of moss, twigs, branches and leaves. "That's how they get there. Some cats can swim but it's very hard, most cats have drowned trying."

Rainpaw yawned. "That's great and all, but where to next?" He seemed impatient, and he had a very short temper. Butterflypaw had learned that the hard way.

Russetnose and Nightgaze lead the new apprentices to a wall of rocks. "This is the border between us and FallClan. We have no need to mark it, thank StarClan." Nightgaze meowed. They went to a huge forest, full of red and orange trees. So that's what Wolfbrook meant when she talked about how trees are affected in Leaf-fall. Butterflypaw had never seen a real, living tree. None grew in the camp and the only tree she'd ever seen was the Fallen Tree, where Quickstar summoned the clan for a meeting.

"This is where we normally hunt, but today we'll only be showing you around the territory." Russetnose said patiently, she obviously expected Rainpaw to get mad. Every cat in the clan knew how angry he got. But instead, Rainpaw nodded understandingly.

They continued walking when a scent touched Butterflypaw's nose. Another cat. She saw Rainpaw turn his head to her.

"Do you smell that?" He whispered to everyone. Every cat nodded. They all slowly stalked towards the strange smell. Russetnose rose her tail to the apprentices, and they stopped. I hope that's the right signal. She gulped. She would not want to fail her day as an apprentice.

Just as she got lost in her thoughts, Butterflypaw heard a series of yowls and hisses. Her fur bushed up when she saw Russetnose and Nightgaze dragging out, what Butterflypaw assumed, to be a kittypet. He had ginger fur and white spots along his paws, face and back and green eyes.

"What are you doing on QuickClan territory?" Nightgaze demanded, her eyes filled with fury. The kittypet hissed and Russetnose held him down. "Answer me!"

"Fine! You caught me. I was only curious to see...if...uh..." the strange cut stuttered.

"Spit it out!" Russetnose snapped.

"My housefolk abandoned me." He murmured. "I wanted to join the local clans. I've heard great stories about you." His eyes grew bright. He seems nice. But there's no way Quickstar will accept him, he's so strict.

"Stay here." Nightgaze ordered. The four clan cats gathered together.

"He seems like he really wants to join us." Butterflypaw commented.

Russetnose nodded. "We should bring him to Quickstar."

Rainpaw and Nightgaze muttered their agreements. Nightgaze turned to the kittypet. "We've decided to let you join us to our camp. Our leader will decide whether you can stay or not." She mewed sternly. "What's your name?"

"My name's Frost. Thank you for giving me a chance!" He mewed.

Russetnose beckoned the patrol back to the camp. Butterflypaw padded to Rainpaw's side. "We found a kittypet on our first day as apprentices! We may have found a new great warrior."

Rainpaw's eyes lit up. "I know right? Imagine if we became warriors earlier?"

"Oh, I wish!" She imagined Quickstar surprising her and her best friend with becoming warriors a few moons early. It'd be a dream come true! She thought.

When they made back to camp, Butterflypaw's paws ached. She'd never walked so much in her life. She trotted to a puddle and drank some water. She looked up and saw the sun setting. I may as well get some rest. Russetnose had promised to teach her how to hunt, and she'd need all the energy she could get. She went into the apprentice's den and crawled into an empty nest. I'll see what Quickstar does about Frost in the morning. She decided, and slipped into sleep.
