As we walked through the mall, the smells of the different shops mixed together as we turned the corner towards the food court. The different restaurants scents mixed evenly with each other to smack my face with such good smelling food.
Chinese, Mexican, Indian, Italian. I thought to myself as we headed for the coffee shop, the small door sign flipped on the open side. I pushed the small door open, causing the small bell to ring making our presence know by anyone who actually cared. The smell of coffee beans and freshly baked cookies roamed around the small shop.
"Well if it isn't my favorite cinnamon roll" A soft, yet obnoxious voice said as we headed up to the counter.
"Hey Lauren, just the usual." I said in a slightly annoyed voice. Her piercing blue eyes looked passed me, noticing Damien as he looked around the small coffee shop."And whose this" She said with a smirk "Is he your boyfriend?!" She said with a stupid surprised look.
I could feel my cheeks heat up and looked away from her. I hated when she acted this way, treating me like some kid.
"N-no... he isn't. He's just a friend." I said shyly.
"Oh, you got my hopes up for nothing... shame on you Elli." She said in a disappointed tone.
"Oh shut up, quit babying me as if your my mother." I snapped back at her.
"Alright, chill out little man" She said, arms up to surrender. "And what can I get for you sweetheart." She said grabbing a sharpie to write down our order.
We got our drinks and had sat down at an outside table and were doing some homework. I had been listening to my music and typing up a paper that was due soon, I hadn't noticed that Lauren had walked up to Damien and started talking to him. I slowly pushed the lower volume button and acted as if I was still listening to music.
"So are you new to town or are you from here because I haven't seen you around before." Lauren said with a questioning tone.
"Oh yeah from out of town, but I'm staying here to get my bachelors degree and maybe get a job soon." He answered in a sweet voice. You could tell it was his dream to learn a lot about music and that he tries hard to accomplish that.
"Oh, that's so cool! Elli here is actually hoping to do the same thing. He really does love music and I know that he dreams to be famous one day." She said as I could her look at me in the corner of my eye.
"I actually am in the same music theory and composition class as him, he's the one who's showing me around the school." He continued "We actually found out that we're going to be living with each other for the year since his dorm didn't have another person already in it with him." He said in a casual tone.
When he had mentioned the fact that we're gonna be sharing the same dorm with each other, I realized that Lauren must be going crazy right now. I silently prayed that she at least keep her feeling down and keep it cool rather than go into a squealing mess.
"Wait really?!" She asked excitedly "Well I hope you too can get along and don't drive each other insane." She said jokingly.
"Heh, me too, I just hope he'll like me as a roommate and don't come off as obnoxious or annoying." He said, in a slight sad tone "But he did help me move in so I think he likes the fact the I'm living with him, unless he just did that to look nice." He said in a depressed tone.
The sound of his sad voice broke my heart and I wish I could have said something, but in fear of letting them know that I basically had eavesdropped on their entire conversation, I stayed quiet.
