The Party

"Lexi!"

After hearing Vera scream from the other end of the line, I instantly regretted picking up her call.

I pull away the phone from my ear to make sure she's done screaming. When I place it back against my ear, I calmly reply, "What is it?"

"Matt just told me there's a party tonight and he said you and I should definitely go."

"But his parents came back today. How are they-", she cuts me off.

"The party isn't at his. There's a new guy in town and he just started school at Kingsbridge. So he's throwing a party to get to know people."

"Vera I don't know if I want to go to be honest." I groan.

"Oh come on Lexi. You're so boring sometimes that I can't believe you and I and friends."

I laugh and that. She wasn't lying, even I wondered about that sometimes.

"Okay but seriously, for the sake of our friendship, you have to come with me to the party."

"But Veraaa, "

"I'll be at yours at eight. And one last thing."

"What's that?"

"Please, please, please wear something that isn't a sweater or jeans. Okay love you, bye."

And the line went dead after that. She didn't even let me say something. She can be so bossy sometimes. We've been friends for so long and I've learned to love everything about her, including her flaws.

I check the time and it's already five. I get up from my bed and go to my closet and start looking for a dress. Hanger after hanger, I start getting frustrated when I'm not able to find a single decent clothing. I really to go to the mall one of these days. And then, finally, I find a navy blue dress. I quickly take it out and head to my bathroom to shower.

It was past seven now and Vera must be coming any moment. She had called me again when I came out of the shower to tell me she'll be doing my hair and make up. And honest to God, I couldn't be more grateful. I didn't know shit about make up or doing my hair. If it weren't for her, I'd be wearing a ponytail everyday to school or other events.

Just then, my door sprang open and Vera burst in with a bag in hand.

"Alright we only have a limited amount of time so sit down."

I rolled my eyes at her dictator style commands.

I did as she told and by eight, I was all ready to go for the party. And may I say, she did an amazing job.

"Vera I swear your hands have been blessed." I said while looking at myself in the mirror.

"Thank you dear. I'd love to hear more praises but Matt is outside so let's not let him wait too long!"

I got my phone and decided on not to bring a purse or bag. I said goodnight to my Dad and told him I would be staying at Vera's on my way out but not before receiving the usual speech of being careful and not drinking too much and to stay safe and yada yada yada. But I obediently listened and nodded to everything he said like the good girl I am.

Vera called shotgun so I sat at the back.

"Hey Lexi, you look nice."

"Thanks Matt!" I shot him a grin. "You look pretty handsome yourself."

"See Vera, unlike you someone actually appreciates my good looks."

I could feel Vera rolling her eyes at that. I just chuckled at the two of them. It was so obvious the two had chemistry but it wasn't meant to be I guess. Matt was a player (which Vera despised) and Vera had just broken up with her long time boyfriend, Peter, so she wasn't ready for a new relationship for some time. Not that I had any experience in that department, but I guess I could understand that she needed time and space.
