NEW Author's note (2024):

The original book I based this off of has transformed and is no longer affiliated with War Robots in any way (the original novel, War Robots, has become Iron Empire, which is still available to read). However, I'm keeping this short prequel novel up because it's a good standalone read and a testament to the franchise that inspired me to create my own mech-based world in Iron Empire.

OLD Author's note (2018): This book is a short prequel of four parts, created to enhance the story of War Robots. If this is the first book of mine, welcome! It's a brilliant place to start, although I suppose you should be the judge of that. If you've already read the book that started it all, simply titled 'War Robots', then you know what to expect. I hope you all enjoy.

All the best,
SmittyBS

About the locations:

The events of this story are clearly fictitious, but many of the locations mentioned are not! You can visit most of the places in this story, and I suggest you do so. Many are really quite beautiful, and devoid of any killer robots. Maybe.

About the game:

War Robots is an action-packed multiplayer game with 6 vs. 6 team battles in real-time. At the time of my writing this forward it had over fifty million downloads. It's lore- or lack thereof- presented the perfect opportunity to tell a unique story.

About the story:

It began in the year 2020.

In a near-alternate future, after months of cold warfare, the conflict that would come to be known as World War Three came to an end after only three days. Nuclear warheads had ravaged the planet, but with their use came new discoveries, furthered out of need for a cure to the growing epidemic of radiation sickness.

Gradually, the nuclear radiation was suppressible. Suddenly atomic power was no longer as life-threatening. Radiation sickness could be treated easily and inexpensively, no deadlier than the common cold. Fear of irradiation and the concept of nuclear deterrence were in the past. Nuclear warheads were deemed obsolete and the technology was refined and developed for other uses.

Nuclear power was used daily to power cities, factories, even cars. But now the world is being thrown once again into a devastating war for power, and at the knife's edge of it all are the new generation of high-end military weapons- War Robots. Humanity's next war would not be one of flesh and blood, but one of metal and oil, with refined nuclear power a burning heart at its centre- a great Iron War.

But how did these War Robots come to be? What happens in the Iron War?

Read on, my friend, and find out. But know this; though the concept of warfare is as ancient as we are, no matter what we do, humanity will always fight. One thing is for certain. War has changed.
