"I can't believe you're going so soon, Kat!" I heard the familiar whine coming from the mouth of my best friend and co-worker.
"I'm sorry Baylee.. I'll make sure to keep in contact with you" I comforted her. It was my last day working at my favourite place in the world. The West Brookland Animal Shelter.
"Hey Kat, are you busy after work? Maybe we could have a coffee at Starbucks or something before you leave me in isolation" She said as she helped me fill the bowls with kibble.
"Yeah sure! I could really do with a mocha right now" I agreed, pinning back a loose lock of hair with a bobby pin.
"I'm nearly finished, why don't you go on ahead and I'll lock up. I'll pay you back someday" I teased and petted the pair of Basset Hounds locked up in the cage.
"Okay Kat. I'll see you in 5" Baylee said before leaving the shelter. I finished my rounds and locked up the doors before heading to Starbucks.
As I walked down the street it started to rain a little, so I picked up the pace. I was nearly at Starbucks until someone ran out in front of me, making me stumble. I turned around, expecting an apology but nobody was there. I looked around, confused and checked the alley the figure came from. There was a large box at the end of the alley that looked like it was moving a little. Then I heard quiet high pitched squeals coming from the box. My heart racing, I ran over to the box, finding 7 tiny staffy puppies snuggled together in attempt to keep themselves dry.
"What the.." I said to myself as I picked up the box. It looks like they haven't been fed in ages.. there's no way a puppy should be this skinny!
I jogged to Starbucks, the box in my arms. I was being careful not to swing the box around as I moved. I saw Baylee walking into Starbucks.
"Baylee!" I shouted. She turned around, surprised. When I hid under the Starbucks umbrella's I showed Baylee what was inside.
"Oh my god! Kat where did you find these?!" Baylee said, walking quickly back to the shelter.
"They were hidden in an alleyway, wet and cold!" I said, fighting the rain to speak.

When we arrived back at the shelter we got towels and warmed them up individually by rubbing their fur the wrong way.
"I can't believe someone would dump puppies in an alleyway. They look extremely malnourished too.." I told Baylee.
"Get the milk.. we need it now.." She said quietly as she tended for the puppies. I immediately got to my feet and heated the puppy milk. I put the milk in several large bottles we saved for emergencies like these.
When I got back I saw Baylee lower her head in grief. I followed her sad gaze to a limp puppy that she was holding.
"This one didn't make it. I tried massaging her heart but she's gone" Baylee said. Her voice was shaking but she continued to take a bottle and feed one of the pups. I did the same
---
We both stayed overnight to look after the puppies since they started crying every time one of us left. By the time it was morning, we were exhausted and fell asleep next to the pups. It was only until another co-worker came in when we woke up. We explained the situation and He left us to deal with them while he took care of the rest of the dogs.
We took them to the vets to get them checked out, it turns out they were around 3-4 weeks old and need to gradually move on to solid food soon.
When we returned to the shelter, our shelter mascot, Daisy the Boxer greeted us. She was curious to see what was inside the box.
"Maybe Daisy can be their orphaned mother? She's done it before. Haven't you Daisy?" I said, introducing each of the puppies to Daisy. They all wag their tails and Daisy licks them. Of course we were still going to keep them supervised, but Daisy could teach them the basic canine rules while we potty train them and teach them how to behave around humans.
We petted each of the puppies and slowly introduced them to the other dogs. It wasn't just Daisy who took a liking to the puppies, but most of the other dogs did too! We sat around for most of the day keeping an eye on the puppies and feeding them at certain times.
"Hey Kat, I still have to work and help the others feed the animals so you're now going to be in charge of taking care of the puppies, alright?" Baylee asked. I nodded my head and looked inside the box of puppies. Most of them were a jet black colour with little white paws. The last one was brindle and white. That one looked pretty cute actually. I picked it up and put it on my knee. It slowly looked up at my face and tears started to fall from my eyes.
Why was I crying? It was just so cute that the inside of me was dying of adorable-ness! I petted it and it wagged its tail at me as it tried to catch my finger as I played with it.
