When I walked back home I was expecting the worst and took my time opening the front door.
"I'm home" I said. I untied Tyson's lead and put some food in his bowl. I looked around to see Damon on his phone lying on the sofa.
"Should I go get some food? I forgot we needed to stock up on supplies" I asked awkwardly. I got Tyson's lead again. Was Damon ignoring me or did he just have selective hearing when he plays on his phone?
I walked out of the door without saying another word and walked to the store with Tyson.
I bought all the main groceries and got about six pots of chicken ramen. My favourite.
When I returned Damon was no where to be seen.
"That's weird..." I said, releasing Tyson.
A few minutes later Iris walks in from the cat flap and started play fighting with Tyson. I walked in the bedroom, still nothing.
I picked up Iris to stop her from scratching Tyson's eye out.
"Where's Damon?" I asked her. She just meowed at me and struggled out of my grasp.
"Oh well, I'll just prepare one for myself until he comes back" I said to myself as I prepared chicken ramen.
A few minutes later I was sitting down on the couch eating by myself. Even though there was obviously some tension between Damon and I, it still felt lonely.
I shook off my feelings and fell asleep on the couch.
---
It must have been about 3 am when Damon finally arrived home.
I rubbed my eyes drowsily and frowned at Damon.
"Where were you? I was just out getting food and when I came back you were no where to be seen!" I said. He sighed and made himself pot noodle.
"You could have told me... For all I know we had a robbery and you were taken hostage.. And your cat needs feeding!" I protested his silence.
He shrugged and sat down next to me. I flicked his shoulder.
"What's wrong Momo? You can tell me.. It's not like I have anyone to tell.." I tried to be helpful but he just shook his head.
"Are you sure you're o-" I said but stopped when I saw bruises on the left side of his face and arm.
"Don't lie to me. What happened?!" I demanded and pointed to his bruises. He looked away from me.
"I fell down the stairs. No big deal" He said quietly, still avoiding eye contact.
Something seemed off...
"You fell down stairs? You could have died! And anyway, what stairs did you fall down? It seems awfully weird that you're only bruised in some areas"
"Um.. I don't want to talk about it.." He said and ended the conversation. It worried me that he wasn't being honest, but I didn't want to push him.
"Okay well, let's talk about something else then. How about we take turns sleeping on the bed? it seems silly not to put the bed to use..." I suggested, struggling to keep my voice chirpy.
"Nah, I'll just sleep on the couch.. Go ahead and use the bed every night, I won't think anything else of it" He said, finishing his noodles.
"Are you sure? Then at least have a few blankets. Hold on, I'll go find some" I said and went in the bedroom to look for a blanket.
After finding a fluffy blanket, I collected a pillow from the double bed and returned to the living room.
"Here you go. It'll be just like a bed now" I cheered and handed him the bedding.
"Thanks Big Kat" He smiled and returned to the couch.
"Okay I'll be in the bedroom. If you're head starts hurting from those bruises just tell me and I'll do something" I said before leaving the room.
---
The next morning I got up extra early so I could walk Tyson before I had breakfast. I was careful not to wake Damon when I left the house.
After a two hour long walk we returned to the house at 8:59 am, just enough time to cook up some bacon and egg.
After feeding Tyson I put the bacon and eggs on the two plates and woke up Damon.
"Wakey Wakey! I made you some bacon!" I said, gently shaking him. He grumbled but got up without saying anything.
"Ah.. I'm so glad there's bacon" He stretched and dragged his feet towards the table. I sat opposite him.
"So what classes do you have?" I asked, stuffing my face with the crispy bacon.
"I don't know... I think I have a physics lecture at 12:30" He answered. I looked down at his plate to see it nearly empty.
"Wow you sure are hungry! I can make some more if you want..." I said but he quickly shook his head as he ate the last bit of bacon.
"So what are you majoring in?" I asked him
"I'm majoring in Engineering..." He said quietly. I tried not to look surprised but he noticed my wide eyes.
"I know, I'm crazy right? But I want to do it.. And I think I can" He told me seriously.
"Well, if you want to do engineering you do it then. Nobody's stopping you from doing it right? I'm majoring in Biology and My minor is business because my heart's pretty set on being a vet. I have to be really tough to do it though" I tried to cheer him up and he flashed me a quick smile.
"Well, I've gotta go now, my first class starts in half an hour and I need to make a few stops at some shops on the way. Well see yah later" I waved and put the dishes in the sink for me to wash up later.
Time to go to my first class.
