Only 5 weeks until I had to leave for university. Although I finished work, I stayed to look after the puppies that I brought in. I was playing with one of the puppies until Baylee arrived.
"Hey Kat, how's it going? I just got a message from the boss. I think you might want to see it..." She said, pulling up her phone to show it to me. I carefully read it.
Hi Baylee, just wanted to text you to say good job in bringing the puppies in with Kaitlyn but unfortunately you can't look after them at the shelter so can you take them home with you? The apartment I live in doesn't allow pets otherwise I would do it myself.. If you or Kat could look after them until they are 7 weeks old that would be great and give you a pay rise ;) xx -Cheyenne
I sighed in frustration.
"I guess one of us will have to keep them? I don't mind at all but I might be busy getting ready for uni so someone else might have to look after them on the last week, is that okay?" I asked Baylee. She nodded and picked one of the puppies up.
"They look adorable already. Good luck Kat, if you need anything just ask me after work and buy me some coffee and i'll be right there!" Baylee said as she petted the puppy for the last time before returning to work.

The next few weeks was busy as I trained and socialised all of the puppies individually. They all got their vaccinations and I just happened to take a liking to the brindle puppy. They were 6 weeks old and it was nearly time for me to go to university.
As I was pouring the kibble into the bowl my phone vibrated in my pocket. I put the packet down and answered the phone to hear Baylee.
"Do you still want me to look after them for the last week?" Baylee said, getting straight to the point.
"Uh actually I think I'm fine..." I said, trailing off as I played with the brindle puppy again.
"What's wrong Kat?" Baylee asked, noticing the unusual quietness in my voice.
"I've taken a liking to the brindle pup..." I told her guiltily.
"Well you know what? No one cares if you keep it or not, you're the one who found them and has been looking after them this whole time. And there's bound to be a university dorm that allows pets!" Baylee told me. I sighed again and fell onto my bed.
"Okay Baylee. I'll speak to you later. Byeee" I finished the conversation and snuggled next to the brindle puppy.
"What shall I call you?" I asked the puppy before I drifted off into a deep sleep.

The day before I had to leave for university came around, and I was packing all the last minute things.
"Hello gorgeous. You're coming with me on an adventure!" I spoke to the dog as I lifted him up and kissed his stomach. I still hadn't thought of a name yet, but I believed the idea would come when the time is right.
When I put the puppy down, I took out several leads and tied them to the puppies. It was finally time to take the rest back to the shelter.
After a 10 minute walk we arrived at the shelter.
"Hey Baylee! I got you some presents!" I said as I pointed to the puppies but Baylee had a pained expression.
"Today's your last day in Philly isn't it?" She asked, her voice cracking a little bit.
"Yeah, but it's not like I'll be gone forever! We can visit each other during the holidays and occasionally grab a coffee together... I'll have so many things to talk about!" I tried to comfort her. I pulled her in for a hug and handed the puppies to her.
"Well.. say bye to everyone else for me.." I said before leading my new puppy back to my apartment.
---
The three hour long journey was tense the whole way. Even my puppy didn't dare to even squeal. When we turned the last corner, everyone else had been dropped off apart from me.
"Hey las, what place d'you 'ave?" The bus driver said. He had a barely understandable northern British accent.
"Uh.. I live in the only place they allow pets in.. If you know where that is" I said. He nodded his head and immediately accelerated, sending me flying to the back of the bus with my puppy. By the time I stood back up, he stopped the bus suddenly, sending me forward at least four rows of seats.
"Um... bye then" I said and picked up my puppy.
"Look, that's where we're going to live from now on!" I told him. He squirmed out of my reach and pulled me to the front door. He never pulled on a lead but I guessed he was excited. I fished my pockets to find the key the receptionist handed me and entered it into the rusty lock.
I was greeted by a nice living room rug with a huge T.V and black leather couches. When I turned around I saw the sparkling tiled kitchen and to my left I saw a beautiful dining room.
"This place isn't half bad!" I said out loud and started unpacking my feeding bowls and popup cage.
Once I fed my puppy, I looked out of the window to see a man coming this way with a large black bag in his hands.
"Oh my god. I'm being robbed" I said to myself before getting a frying pan from the kitchen cupboard. I slowly crouched down behind the counter and waited for my enemy to enter the house. I then heard the clinking of keys enter the lock, which confused me, because I thought I was the only person with the keys.
When he opened the door, he was whistling then I heard him stop in his tracks.
"Why the hell is there a dog here?!" He said quite loudly. It sounded angry too, so without thinking I samurai launched myself towards him and bashed him on the head with a frying pan.
"What the hell?! Why are you in my house?! Get off of me!" He shouted.
I loosened my grip across his neck.
"YOUR house? Um. This is my house?" I said. We both shared confused looks.
"Liar" Was all he said before showing me his keys.
"They said I was the only one who has the keys so how the hell did YOU get in here?" He asked. I got my keys out of my pocket.
"Well these are the same keys as yours..."
He fell silent for a moment longer.
"This is a one bedroom house, there's no way they could have made a mistake..." He said. I widened my eyes a little.
"Well I'm not leaving, I have a dog to take care of. You don't have a pet to take care of so you could choose any other house" I said. He frowned.
"I got this house because it's the only one which allows pets, and no, I can't move out because I actually have a pet of my own" He said as he pushed me off of him.
"What? A pet goldfish?" I teased him but then he called a name which was replied with a big
MEEEOOOOW
Immediately my puppy came tumbling over towards the silver Bengal cat.
"Keep your mutt away from my kitten!" He said, pushing my puppy away.
"Don't touch my dog! He has feelings too you know.." I said defensively, but he ignored me and carried on playing with his kitten.
"What's your name by the way? I don't want to call you 'girl who kicked my ass on the first meeting'" He said.
"Um my name is Kaitlyn Grande but most call me Kat or Kate or something, I don't really care" I said but he started to laugh.
"Hahah! So people call you Kat, and you last name is Grande? That's like saying Big Cat. I like it. I'm gonna call you Big Kat from now on. Oh and my name is Damon.. don't wear it out" He said in a harsh tone. My lips tugged into a smile as I thought of the best nickname for him.
"Then I'll call you Momo!" I said in a girly tone.
At that point I could tell that university was going to be a long ride.
