You know when you're in bed and you can hear the super faint, muffled sound of heavy snow falling? In my bedroom I always leave the curtains a tiny bit cracked in winter so I can look out of them at night and see the dark shapes falling swiftly past the pane. If I can't sleep I just watch the snow falling. It's so simple and blanketing, it makes the whole world seem quiet, even for a moment.

And I know in the morning it's going to be so gorgeous and fresh and crisp. I wake up early, I run to the living room, I throw open the curtains. The lawn has vanished: replaced by a carpet of glistening white. Beautiful and undisturbed. The sky is grey- but it's a calm grey, not threatening or stormy. It's quiet. Everything is quiet. Then I slowly open the window. I stick my head out- the frozen air makes my skin tingle, and I can't look directly at the shining bright snow. I take a deep breath in through my nose and the smell of fresh snow fills my nostrils.
